So, this article is relevant to how I’m feeling at this exact moment. Today was one of the best days I’ve had in a while. I was surrounded by amazing girlfriends as we got to enjoy a day on Sea Island. The beach, the sun and all the love and laughter made the day great, but after we returned home I began to enter a true funk. I didn’t know why I felt so strange and couldn’t really figure out a way to get out of it until my gals started showing me and talking me through some ideas that got me thinking. The things listed below are a couple of ways to get your mind off of whatever is bothering you and to get your brain on more positive things again.
1. Listen to some music you can jam to!
You know there’s always that one artist or band that lifts every worry and helps you get lost in the music. For me, most of that is Worship music because it’s so uplifting in any situation, but there are still some awesome secular artists that speak to me just the same.
2. Watch Your Favorite Show on Netflix.
Laughter is always the best medicine so I like to cheer myself up by watching something funny! I also strongly suggest watching Tim Hawkins videos if you want some good comedy, he always has me in tears I laugh so hard.
3. Take a Nap.
This may seem dumb to some people but a short nap can give you a chance to rest your brain. Overthinking is always the root cause of my stress and anxiety and there’s nothing wrong with giving your mind and body a short break so that it can wake up ready and rejuvenated!
4. Go To the Gym.
This might not be everyone’s cup of tea but science so beautifully explains how letting out that energy and all of that tension helps to clear our minds and helps us focus on doing something productive and positive for our bodies! Yeah, that's super nerdy but I think we can all admit that even if the workout is so intense and we feel like dying during the long 3-mile run on the treadmill we feel great afterward and good about ourselves!
5. Get your Nails Done.
This one is for my ladies. If you're in the situation where you can, I highly suggest doing this and maybe even bring a gal pal along for more fun. Getting my nails done helps me to relax and have a little me-time, which most of us seem to neglect a lot of the time. There's nothing wrong with take a little time for ourselves in the middle of our crazy, crazy schedules.
6. Take a Ride.
My favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon is to go for a drive. It seems so old school and boring to some but I love riding out in the country on a sunny day, with the windows down and listening to the best music all while singing at the top of my lungs. Just taking the time to be thankful for the smallest things and enjoy life help lift my mood instantly.
7. Put On a Facial!
Again, this one's for the girlies even though we could probably convince some of our guy friends to participate too! This always helps when I'm in a funk. Sitting around with my girls and doing facials all while talking about life, boys, our walks with God, and every other thing imaginable helps relieve all the tension that we sometimes keep built up inside!
Side Note: always, always, always remember to surround yourself with positive people and be that positive light too! No, it's not possible to always be "positive Polly", but if we support each other and help each other through situations, we're able to learn from each other and be strong backbones for others
8. Card Games with your People.
My favorite thing growing up was game nights with my family. Sitting around playing Monopoly, Scrabble, Sorry, or Pictionary was always so fun! Now take that fun and add your college best friends and you get it all over again! I couldn't go without these chill, slow, laughter-filled nights with my closest nuggets and I wouldn't trade their uplifting comments and smiles for the world!
Whether it be a deep funk that you can't get out of or just every-day problems, one of these eight things is bound to do the trick and if ya figure something else out, do that! Life is meant to be a roller coaster, but if we don't take advantage of every opportunity to laugh and love we're just existing, not truly LIVING!
