Choosing a major in college is hard. There's just so many options. I've changed my major and minor multiple times, but I have finally found the right one for me. Once you know, you know.
Once I stepped foot in my first English class, there was no turning back. English was always something I was good at and reading and writing have always been my favorite pastimes.
After taking a few classes, I realized I fit in really well with this group of weird, quirky, bookworm intellectuals. If you choose to be an English major, know that there are so many things that only those of us in this major will understand.
1. Reading is life.
Seriously. All books. Even books we don't want to read. The longest I've gone without reading a book is like a week, tops. Books are life.
2. Write. Writing. Written.
Obviously, if you choose English as a major, writing has to be second nature to you. Ten page paper due in a week? No problem.
3. There will always be work to do.
You mean your Business major boyfriend doesn't have homework? Yeah, that'll never be you. Now go read the next 100 pages of the Jane Austen book for Victorian Lit.
4. You will mentally correct bad grammar for the rest of your life.
Or maybe out loud, too. There's really no stopping your grammar police from coming out and saying hello.
5. Your new vocabulary will impress your friends and make your papers sound like you actually know what you're talking about.
Sometimes I don't even know how I learn the words. They just get ingrained into your brain somehow. I blame Shakespeare.
6. You will be asked if you're going to be a teacher every time you say your major.
Nothing wrong with being a teacher, but believe it or not, there are more options out there for us than just being a teacher.
7. There are days where you question your choice of major.
How can I read three books simultaneously and write four essays by Friday? I don't know, but somehow you will.
8. Your teachers and other English majors will become your family.
One big, dysfunctional, smart, and witty family. But a family nonetheless.
