In just around a month college students will be heading back to campus for another semester of classes. The summer is now coming to close for us and will probably end faster than you think. Because of this it is time to get everything you wanted to out of the way so that you have your head cleared for fall classes. I feel as if we take for granted the time we get over the summer because we forget how much we wanted that extra time during the school year.
It is important to not only have this time off, but to spend it doing stuff that will benefit you and put you in the right mindset when you go back to school. So I decided to create a list of important things to consider doing before heading back to college life. Especially for a resident who is leaving their hometown to go back to campus, this list will beneficial for allowing you to get your mind focused on the next few months ahead. Also, if you are an incoming freshman, pay attention. This list will hopefully combat homesickness or regret later on in the semester.
1. Eat at your favorite hometown restaurant.
Let's face it. Usually college food isn't good. So before you head to college, indulge in your favorite meal from home. Either get a meal from your favorite hometown spot or get a home cooked meal from the family. This will allow you to eat well one last time before going to face the dining hall.
2. Spend a whole day with your friends.
Your hometown friends are a group of their own. Sadly you have to leave them when school comes around. So spend a whole day dedicated to spending time with them. Either spend a day taking a road trip or just chill at home. This is a chance to say goodbye and set the stage to spend a few months apart.
3. Spend a whole day with your family.
Just like your hometown friends, you will have to say goodbye to your family. You may be annoyed with them because you have been stuck with them all summer, but you will wish you took the time with them when you miss them in college.
4. Organize your room.
Even though it may seem like you can just leave all your problems behind when you go back to college, you will regret not fixing up your room when you come back home. Take the time to organize it so that when you come back for break you will have a welcoming environment.
5. Go back to your high school.
For incoming freshman, sometimes closure is the best way to have a great semester in college. Instead of avoiding the place you spent the last four years wishing to leave, go back and give it a proper goodbye. Maybe even relive a few memories with friends and remember how you got to this spot in the first place.
6. Clean out your clothes.
This goes hand in hand with cleaning your room. But also this will allow you to not only start fresh for the new semester, but also pack a lighter load for college.
7. Figure out your goals for the next semester.
Whether it is acing your biology class or winning a sports game, set goals for what you want to achieve for the upcoming semester. This will set your mind for when classes start and will hopefully keep you focused. It is best to do it now because your head is clear and can hopefully envision the goals you can achieve. Write them down so you will always stay grounded during the semester.
8. Tie up any loose ends.
Even though college is great because you can leave your hometown behind, you will eventually have to come back. Whether you have a disagreement with a family member or an ongoing war with an ex, try and tie up loose ends. This way you are truly ready to start a new year at college
