"Oh you’re a twin. So what’s it like?” is the first question people ask when they find out I have a twin.
I secretly have always wanted to respond, “It’s literally the worst.” Just to see their reactions.
After being asked the same question hundreds of times, I have come to realize that most people don't really understand what it's like to have a twin. The only basis for their knowledge about twins comes from the Mary-Kate and Ashley movies they use to watch when they were younger.
Below are eight things that people don't realize about twins.
1. You’re always compared to one another
2. You have to share a birthday
Even though our parents always made sure we had our own cakes and sung us “Happy Birthday” separately, I always wondered what it would feel like to have my own birthday.
3. Being referred to as “the Twins”
Nothing is more insulting than being labeled as “the Twins.”
4. “So why don’t y’all look alike?”
Stop asking me questions. Just stop. Please Google “fraternal twins.”
5. Everything is always equal
Growing up, my parents were huge on making sure that everything was always equal between my sister and me. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, some times it did get annoying.
6. You have hundreds of baby pictures of the two of you in matching outfits
And when I say hundreds, I mean hundreds.
7. “Wait…. do y’all do that twin telepathy thing?”
Am I magical? No, of course I can’t read my twin’s mind.
8. People thinking you do everything together
Just because I shared the womb with another person doesn’t mean I share a life with them. I am an individual. I have a name, and it is certainly not “Twin."
