As Twitter and Tumblr users have pointed out for the past week, “we have finally reached page 1 of 365”. It is time for new memories, new Netflix series to binge watch, and new weird Internet fads everyone is going to try out. As social norm states, it is essential for us to all choose goals that we want to achieve over the next 12 months, whether it's losing weight or finishing all 12 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy before making it to February. We all have goals, but these are some that I believe should be on everyone’s list this year.
1. Taking things with a grain of salt. People are so easily offended nowadays that it's ridiculous. One simple joke with even your best friends can turn into WWIII if they do not understand where you are coming from.
2. Adventure. Go out of your comfort zone and travel to somewhere that makes all of your Instagram followers #jealous of where you are.
3. Make a little extra effort with your family. Take even just 5 minutes out of your day to shoot a quick text to your parents telling them how you miss them at college, or even just tag your brothers or sisters in a mildly inappropriate tweet to show them you’re actually thinking about them. It’s all about the little things that make it go a long way. They’re always there for you, even when you are a couple of hours away at school.
4. Get involved with a new sport. Stay in shape while having the time of your life, meet new people, learn a few new tricks. Who knows, maybe ultimate Frisbee is your new calling.
5. Get in touch with old friends. Remember those people that you met a summer ago and your only interaction nowadays is liking their picture on Insta? See what they’re up to, go get some food, see how life has been.
6. Try new restaurants. Yeah, you might be a broke college student, but plan accordingly and go try a new place every once in a while. Eat your lil' heart out at a small bagel shop, try a new sushi joint, or even try a little hole-in-the-wall coffee shop that has the best coffee you have ever tasted.
7. Go off the grid for a weekend. As someone who is tethered to their phone 24/7, putting it down for 2 days is quite nice. Go live your life for a little bit without constantly hearing the ding from your notifications.
8. Mend bridges. Why would someone ever want to willingly be on bad terms with someone? (I get there are some instances where it is better you don’t talk to the other individual.) But if there is a simple mistake made, just go apologize. Own up to your mistakes, don’t pretend they never happened.
Good luck with the 2016!
