Philadelphia is known for a number of things- cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, sports teams, etc. However, it is a city that doesn't get enough credit for its contribution to the arts. Recently, I took a trip to Philadelphia's Magic Gardens for a class project and I fell in love. It is a community arts center and non-profit organization started by Isaiah Zagar over a decade ago that is still growing. I took a number of pictures during my visit and I couldn't help but share with the world. Here are just 10 reasons why you should also make it a point to visit.
1. It's only $5 if you show your school ID. This is the perfect price for a college student on a budget.
2. It is located on South Street in downtown Philadelphia. South Street is lined with restaurants, markets, and stores where you can relax before or after visiting Magic Gardens.
3. The art begins the second you walk down the street.
This is the gate and wall that can be seen as you walk up to the door. It gives a sneak preview for what's to come once you walk through the door.
4. Founder Isaiah Zagar hosts workshops to teach young artists how to hone their craft. Mr. Zagar purchased this empty lot to turn garbage from the community into art. Zagar, pictured below in the center, has become a fixture in the city of Philadelphia.
5. Magic Gardens hosts a monthly series May through October called "Twilight in the Gardens." It includes music from local musicians, simple art projects, and a relaxing outlet to socialize with college students and adults alike. Admission for students, senior citizens, and members is $12 and $15 for adults.
6. The space is allowed to be rented out for private events. As a matter of fact, Magic Gardens was voted the Best Wedding Venue at the Citypaper's Reader's Choice Awards in 2013. This chandelier would be the perfect accent to get married under.
Now that you have seen some of my favorite pictures, you should plan a trip to Magic Gardens. There is fun for families, couples, and college students on a weekly basis. To find out more, browse the Philly Magic Gardens website.
