Tattoos are pretty controversial. Most people either hate them or love them, and it seems like some of the older generations think that tattoos are the one thing that can automatically make someone trashy and not worth their time. But, contrary to popular belief, I think tattoos are beautiful. Whether someone only has one the size of a quarter or a whole sleeve on their arm, there's no denying they are works of art. Here are eight reasons why we need to stop discriminating against tattoos.
1. Most of them are beautiful.
I have seen so many tattoos that take my breath away. Huge murals of flowers, people, animals; anything, really.
2. It's a way for people to express themselves.
Having tattoos is a way for anyone to artistically express themselves. They are unique and they're something a lot of people work hard on to create. A lot of people have their own artwork designs tattooed on their bodies and I think that is the best way to express your passions.
3. They are usually meaningful.
Yes, even if you have a tattoo of a slice of pizza, odds are it means something to you. Even if the meaning behind that size if pizza is "I was 18 and wanted to rebel against my parents," that is a funny memory you will have for the rest of your life. The meaning could be anything, but they are all important to that person and you shouldn't be judging that.
4. It's not telling of anyone's character.
Someone having a tattoo teaches you nothing about their character. Don't assume anything about them. Unless their tattoo is a giant swastika or "f*** the police" across their neck, then you can't make any conclusions regarding this person. If anything, it tells you they are unique and aren't afraid of commitment, which are some pretty great qualities.
5. They don't affect anyone's abilities.
Just because someone has tattoos doesn't mean it affects their ability to do a corporate job.
6. It's artwork.
Someone drawing anything intricate on a human body while they are just laying there awake is an artist. There is no argument on this one.
7. They don't make you less feminine.
No, you won't look ugly in a wedding dress, or any frilly dress for that matter. If anything, your tattoos will only make it look cooler.
8. You should stop worrying so much.
With all that being said, if you still discriminate against tattoos, the fact of the matter is that it's your body and you can do whatever you want with it. If you want to get tattoos, get them. If you don't, then don't get them. It's not your body so it's not your position whatsoever to judge anyone based on their choices about their appearance.
We were taught in kindergarten to "never judge a book by its cover" and if you STILL haven't learned that lesson, then maybe you should step back and try.
