8 Reasons Why Having A Big Sister Is The Best

No, we're not talking sorority sisters.

8 Reasons Why Having A Big Sister Is The Best

I think that anyone can agree that there is no relationship quite like the relationship between two sisters. I have grown up having a sister who is ten years older than me and we have been inseparable since I was born. There have been countless laughs, tears, venting sessions, and even more laughs in the past eighteen years. I treasure our relationship for 8 million reasons, but here are eight of them (in no particular order):

1. OK, let's cut to the chase. Hand me downs.

There is no better feeling than your big sister walking into your room with a ton of clothes asking if you want some of them, especially when she comes in with that dress that you’ve snuck out of her closet too many times to count.

2. You get the best fashion advice.

If it weren’t for my older sister, I would have dressed like a total weirdo in high school. I probably wouldn’t have caught on to any trends and would’ve shopped at Justice far longer than I needed to. Plus, the great thing about sisterhood is that you can be brutally honest about if something looks good or not. I don’t even want to know what I would’ve gone around looking like if I didn’t have my (free!) personal stylist.

3. And boy advice.

Oh man. Again with the honesty—this time it’s on both sides. Having a big sister provides me with the best boy counselor ever. I’ve been able to go to her to rant about a guy I like, ask for advice on how to handle an awkward situation, and be completely open about my relationship. She has given me advice all the way from how to respond to a text to how to get over challenges between me and my boyfriend. And to be honest—she’s been right basically every time.

4. Weddings!

Getting to watch your big sister get married is so special. It was even more special as I got to be her maid of honor and stand right next to her when she became a wifey. I’ve lost count of how many pictures we have sent each other of wedding dresses and venues. Even after she got married, we still rave about all things weddings and we even talk about mine (I know…too soon). Whether it’s weddings or anything else in the world, it’s so fun to geek out with your sister about the most random stuff.

5. You can be petty without being judged.

We both know that if we need to talk about someone who annoys us, we are one text away. I have lost count of how many screenshots of texts, tweets, and Facebook statuses I have sent my sister with a mini rant trying to figure out why some people are the way that they are. Thankfully, with sisters, there’s basically an unspoken agreement that you will always side with each other no matter what.

6. NSYNC dance parties.

Did you not know where I got my sick moves, fun nature, and awesome taste of music? Now you do.

7. All of the secrets.

Friends can sometimes fail you in keeping secrets, but your sister will always keep them top secret—no pinky swears necessary. And if you really need to spill something, you know that it’s totally acceptable to tell your older sister. She’s basically your other half, right?

8. You get to grow up with a best friend who unconditionally loves you.

No matter how much or how little you and your big sister fight, you love each other more than life itself. You know that regardless of what’s going on, you can go to your big sister and she’ll know exactly what to say whether it’s what you want to hear or not. And all of those crazy memories you have together are something you will never, ever let go of.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
