The 8 PNMs You Will Meet During Recruitment

It’s 10:00 a.m. on the first day of recruitment week. You look out the window of your sorority house to see hundreds of PNMs lining up on the sidewalk. Don’t Panic.

Recruitment can be overwhelming; from finding the perfect outfit to figuring out how to keep your makeup from melting off (hint: it's all about the primer), there is just no time to worry about the hundreds of PNMs you are about to encounter. This guide will take you through the types of PNMs that you will meet during the week of recruitment and will give you some guidance on how to approach each of them.

  1. The “Legacy”. Chances are, you will encounter at least one Legacy during your week-long recruitment activities. This PNM is no stranger to the world of Greek life-- it’s basically in her blood. Although not always the most desirable PNM or right fit for your chapter, The Legacy comes from a long line of Greeks and will most likely get her choice when it comes to chapters.
  2. The “All Nerves” PNM. No, she’s not just sweating because it’s 115 degrees outside. This PNM is just plain terrified to be inside a sorority house, surrounded by hundreds of girls flipping their hair in sync with one another. This is very commonplace during Recruitment-- let’s face it, Recruitment can overwhelm the best of us. The trick with this PNM is simple: let her know that you were once in her same position, that she is not as different as she fears. Spark up a conversation with Miss Nerves and make her feel comfortable in your home and her nerves will melt away.
  3. The “Omigod I Just LOVVEE Recruitment” PNM. This PNM is one of the easiest to spot. Grinning from ear to ear, she can barely suppress the squeal of excitement that she is ACTUALLY inside a REAL sorority house talking to REAL sorority women. Her enthusiasm about Recruitment will not only make it easier to converse with her, but it will also make you excited as ever to be a part of university Greek life. Take advantage of the opportunity to talk with someone just starting her journey into Greek Life and let it renew your love for your house!
  4. The “Uninterested” PNM. Although equally as noticeable as the overly excited PNM, this girl has a vastly different attitude toward Recruitment. Whether she was guilted into following in her mother’s footsteps or she reluctantly signed up with an enthusiastic friend, this PNM’s reason for going through Recruitment does not seem to be sincere. Although the most difficult PNM to encounter, this PNM can be turned around once you show her how amazing your chapter is. She still isn't interested? Don't lose any of the love and enthusiasm you have towards your chapter; use this as a time to talk about all of the things you love about your sisterhood!
  5. The “Overachiever”. This PNM filled out her Recruitment application as thoroughly as she did her college application. She’s a pre-med student, volunteers at the local homeless shelter, already has an internship, and finds time to play collegiate level sports. No one knows how she balances it all, but this PNM has got it together. Not only will she make a great addition to your chapter, but also she will most likely be your chapter’s president one day. Show a genuine interest in all of her many activities and in return she is sure to be interested in your chapter.
  6. The “Silence Is Golden” PNM. This PNM is one of the most difficult to interact with. Every member fears a rush conversation filled with awkward silences and one-word answers, and that is exactly what this PNM delivers. There’s no trick to handling this PNM except to act like you don't realize she isn't responding and just to ramble on and on about how much you love your sorority like it's your job!
  7. The “Celebrity”. This PNM is the rarest of them all and also the most coveted. She is the PNM that all sororities on Greek row go out of their way to woo. Whether she is a senator’s daughter or the daughter of a real housewife of Orange County, all eyes are on this PNM during rush week. One can only hope she rushes your sorority and that you go on her yacht for Spring Break. Just remember, usually it is the PNM who needs to keep their cool but this time it is you. Deep breaths help.
  8. The “Rush Crush”. Classy, fun, outgoing and sweet, the Rush Crush is someone who has everything you’re looking for in a PNM. After talking with her during Set One of Recruitment you knew that one day she would be your Little--and you made sure to let all of your sisters know that you called dibs! Not only is the Rush Crush a great addition to your chapter, she’ll also be a great addition to your family one day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
