Some people have their football season. Some people have their baseball season. For me? Movie season.
Since I'm someone who loves going to the movies, sometimes I get upset when I'm not able to go as much during the school semester. Not only do I barely have the funds, but I can barely schedule time to eat at school. So whenever I'm home, this is typically when I am able to catch up on what movies have been out for a little bit and what's brand new. Not only that, but this is Oscar and "big movie" time in December. Expect to be seeing commercials galore for big blockbusters and really great dramatic films during this time.
1. "Manchester By The Sea"
Not only does this have 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, but expect this to be nominated across the board at the Oscars. Casey Affleck delivers such a realistic performance in this film by portraying someone dealing with their brother's death while also assuming the responsibilities that come with it. It's less of a typical movie and more like you're watching someone's actual family on screen. Not only does Affleck's character have to deal with his brother's son, but he has to face a lot of his own baggage as well.2. "La La Land"
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Do you need any other reason to see it? Although some people may not be a fan of musicals, this one has been getting stunning reviews across the board with 96% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. What's so cool about this one is that it's a new kind of musical that gives a nod to the way musicals numbers were performed in the 50s (think "Singin' in the Rain"). Stone and Goslings' chemistry in past films should be reason enough to want to see this, but if not, this will be "Whiplash" director Damian Chazelle's second big movie debut.3. "Arrival"
It's been a minute since there has been a well received Sci-Fi film. With 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, everyone has been blown away by this film and its commentary on how we are able to communicate with others. If you were a fan of the thriller "Prisoners" or "Sicario," you'll love what Denis Villaneuve has done here. Even though not everyone likes the idea of Sci-Fi, this one is not your typical supernatural type of flick but more of one that keeps you reflecting days afterward.
4. "Moana"
Disney always has to put in their token Christmas season movie. Although this is not on the same Wintery vibe as "Frozen", people are thoroughly blown away by how the Polynesian culture is portrayed gorgeously in this film. I hardly know anyone that doesn't like Dwayne Johnson and if you've been on a Lin-Manuel Miranda kick like I have been for the past year, you'll definitely want to check this one out.
5. "Nocturnal Animals"
Amy Adams needs to chill out. Here's her other big movie this season which has gotten a lot of buzz. The cast in this is great, stretching from Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, to Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor Johnson. What's cool about this film, is that designer Tom Ford both directed and wrote it. The format of this movie is definitely not what'd you typically expect, but besides the fact that it's stunning it also has a Kubrick-esqe vibe to it. Sigh, I wish we could all rock Tom Ford.
6. "Moonlight"
Metacritic rated this as the 4th best film of all time. This is a film everyone should see for its direction, style and themes. During the war-on-drugs era in Miami, the character of Chiron is played by three different actors during the youth, adolescence and adulthood of his life. With it getting great reviews for its themes of race and sexuality, Mahershala Ali (aka Remy Danton from "House of Cards") has also been applauded for his performance in this.
7. "Passengers"
With arguably the two biggest movie stars in the same movie, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, why wouldn't you be plan on seeing it? The reason for the two waking up early from their hibernation in space is the mystery that surrounds the trailer. If you're like myself, you would just want to see this film to see if the chemistry between them is as great as I picture it. With it taking around a decade to get off of the ground, let's hope that it lives up to the hype.
8. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"
Duh.
