Indie artists are a force to be reckoned, especially when it comes to the female voices pushing the genre forward. As artists like Florence + the Machine, Regina Spektor, and Halsey make more popular culture features—there are some women that are staying simple in the meantime. Here are some women of indie that everyone should definitely check out!

1. MUNA

Muna is an all-female group that just began to release singles this year. While they are still making their debut in the music scene with songs like "Loudspeaker" and "Winterbreak," they are travelling with other alternative group, Grouplove, famous for their single, "Tongue Tied." Their ongoing tour dates can be found here!

2. Betty Who

This Australian synth pop queen has been at it since 2010 and has been getting more acclaim since she signed to RCA Records in 2013. With songs like "Somebody Loves You" and "All of You" at number one on various charts, in addition to her Top 100 debut album Take Me When You Go, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

3. HAIM

After becoming more popular in 2012 from opening for artists like Ke$ha, this group of sisters released Days Are Gone in 2013 leading the charts across the U.S. Songs like "Falling," "My Song 5," and "The Wire" show off their range from grinding rock to fluttering pop.

4. St. Vincent

Born Anne Clark, she spent roughly a decade before getting critical acclaim. Her latest two solo albums, Strange Mercy and St. Vincent, have both peaked in the top 20 in the U.S. and she continues to gain popularity for singles like "Digital Witness." She is alsoa strong feminist through her fluid gender and sexual identity as well as her advocacy for identities off the gender and sexuality binaries.

5. London Grammar

This British trio has been escalating since 2012, especially with their most popular single, "Wasting My Young Years" from their album If You Wait. They performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2014 and have been still active touring the world while they continue to work on future music.

6. Lucius

Featuring the two front women, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, this band has been very successful over the past several years. Their latest album, Good Grief, was released this past March and is already perfoming well on the charts with songs like "Almost Makes Me Wish for Rain" and "Madness." Details about their ongoing tour can be found here!

7. Grimes

Representing Canada, she has become one of the more prominent voices of alternative pop music with her latest album, Art Angels, reaching the top of Billboard's Alternative chart. After working with fellow alternative pop artist, Florence + the Machine, over the past Summer, she continues to promote this latest album with singles like "Flesh without Blood," "Kill V. Maim," and "California" while working forward to the future.

8. Lykke Li

Born in Sweden, she has blended various indie and pop subgenres as well as a variety of instruments from synthesizers, to cellos, to African drums. She has continued to perform better on the charts with each album since 2008 and with songs like "I Follow Rivers" and "Gunshot" propelling her forward in her new band, LIV, there is hardly anything that can stop this Scandinavian wonder from making it big.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
