Fret not, here are the top eight things you missed out on!

1. An awesome countdown

The Olympic ceremony started with a countdown from 10 to 0 in Portuguese. Dancers dressed in silver bodysuits used silver floats to showcase a choreographed countdown.

2. Fireworks!

After the countdown, the opening ceremony started off with a bang!

3. Gisele Bundchen walks a runway at the opening.

Model Gisele performed a cat walk to Girl from Ipanema.

4. Dancers perform a historical interpretation of Brazil’s history

Indigenous descendants performed a dance which told a compelling story about the history of Brazil and how it came to be.

5. Greece leads the march

As is tradition, Greece was the first team to enter the Maracana Stadium.

6. The marching of 207 national teams

207 teams from different countries all over the world come together in Rio to compete for medals.

7. The marching of refugee athletes

The first ever refugee team to compete in the Olympics. They were given a warm welcome by the crowd. The refugees’ stories on how they got to where they are today is unbelievable. Looking forward to watching them compete!

8. The Olympic Cauldron being lit

Three time champion of the French Open, Gustavo Kuerten entered the stadium with a lit torch. He then handed the torch to Hortencia Marcari, a female basketball player. But, it wasn’t over yet. She passed the torch to Vanderlei de Lima, a marathon runner.

With the torch in de Lima’s hand, he walked up the steps to light the Rio 2016 Cauldron!

The 2016 Rio Olympics have begun!
