Going home is one of the best and worst things about college. On the one hand, not sharing a bathroom with 30 other people and getting to snuggle your dog is nothing short of relaxing. On the other hand, going home has some definite drawbacks. Transitioning from living among other students and experiencing constant excitement back to living under your parents' roof can be taxing, to say the least.
1. The Initial Relaxation
You get home, you flop onto the couch, and you take a nap. You don't have to worry about classes or even social events for a few days, you just get to sit at home and live it up. You don't have to walk 10 minutes to the dining hall to get food, you just have to walk a few rooms over. When you're really lucky, someone (your mom) might even make food for you.
2. They Start To Annoy You
Even though you love your family and are beyond excited to see them, it can be a little tough to adjust to following someone else's rules again. Many a power struggle has arisen between my parents and myself upon minutes of me being home. It definitely takes time on both ends to adapt to this transition from my independence back to our mutual codependence.
3. Realizing That You Need Money
There is no better time to ask for money than when you're at home and they can see how desperately you need it. Think about how much gas money I spent to get here, Mom!
4. Telling Your Younger Siblings About Your Cool #College Adventures
They think that whatever you do is cool no matter what, but exaggerating a little never hurt anyone.
5. Being Way More Impressed By Your Other Friends' Stories
6. Having To Deal With Your Parents Nagging You Again
I am physically unable to get things done during a break, so don't even bother asking.
7. Getting Real, Homemade Food
One of the most important things to me is food, so the good food at home is the main reason why I keep coming back. (I'm just kidding, Mom!)
8. Family Is Everything And There's Nowhere Else Where You'd Rather Be
Even though I love my school, going home is always relaxing, refreshing, and much needed. Sometimes you just need a break and going home is one of the best breaks that there is.
