Everyone thinks of New York City as "The City of Dreams", "The Empire City", or "The City That Never Sleeps"
While these nicknames hold some truth, there are many locations in this gigantic city that no one knows about, or at least not enough people in the world know about. From some of the most unique ways to eat to some of the strangest reconstruction of places, New York has many areas that are pretty crazy.
1. Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer
Okay my Instagram has several unnecessary pictures of this place, so? The reason for this small place's recent rise to fame is actually not for its burgers. Its milkshakes are literally the most beautiful desserts in the world. How would I know? Because I've been here, and now I can finally say that. The original location is in Soho, on Broome Street. It's a tiny little pub along just a regular street with a small market next door. Here's the funny thing: the wait time has gotten so long before that they had to place line ropes outside of Black Tap then another set all the way down on the corner of the street. I waited in the rain, but only for a half an hour. I'm not even being sarcastic; that wait time was nothing compared to what others went through last winter, when the wait time ranged from 2 to 7 hours! Their shakes include the Cotton Candy shake, the Cookie shake, the Brooklyn Blackout, which is a shake with a huge brownie on top and lots of chocolate, the Reese' Pieces shake. and a bunch more especially on holidays now. They plaster vanilla icing on the sides of a glass, cover that in either cookie crumbs, reese's pieces, candy, or brownie, then pour the shake in, attach brownies, cookie sandwiches, cotton candy fluff, or other things around and on top of a huge mountain of whipped cream. /yes, there's plain milkshakes and delicious burgers and other actual food, but when you come here, you come to live, not be boring.
2. Rolf's
This is not just a German restaurant - this is the winter holiday restaurant. What I mean by this is that Rolf's goes all out for the holidays of December. They create a small, majestic, bright arena out of its simply painted walls and tables. When you walk in, you're surrounded by Christmas lights from top to bottom, pine tree garland wrapped around every area of the walls and ceilings, holiday dolls in between the lights and garland, ornaments tucked into each place all around the room. and fake icicles hanging from above. Once you walk into Rolf's, you'll forget that you're in a simple restaurant on a random street in New York.
3. Museum of Ice Cream
OK, personally I've never been here, but from what I've seen from others, it looks INSANE...in a good way. Apparently when you walk in, they hand you a bowl of ice cream, kind of like your ticket in. So if you don't get one, I guess you can't move forward. Throughout the entire museum, there's a pool of sprinkles, or at least they say they're sprinkles. But they possibly just used plastic, shredded items for sanitary reasons. Still, it's cool! I mean, come on, a pool of sprinkles! Also, I saw some images of ice cream hanging lights. Now, I doubt they're actually ice cream, but hey, you never know. This kind of museum may have many more surprises behind the scenes of what visitors see.
4. The Plaza Hotel
Now why on earth would some ritzy hotel be considered unique? Well, if any of you ever read the Eloise books, you'd know why. If you haven't, Eloise was an iconic character that became a symbol of the Plaza Hotel; she is a storybook character that literally lives in the hotel and goes on crazy adventures. I loved reading it because I would have loved to be that kid with a life in a wealthy hotel. Then there's also the fact that the hotel is like a century old and has castle-like features to it. So whenever you're in here, you feel like royalty...however, the prices aren't so cheap. But if you have money to burn, visit The Plaza!
5. Penn Station/Madison Square Garden
Who cares about a train station and why is this concert hall, although cool, a big deal? The reason is that they're both the same building. That's right. Madison Square Garden, the place for basketball and hockey games, wrestling and boxing matches, and concerts, is situated within Pennsylvania Station. I've walked into MSG and the other entrances to Penn many times. But it doesn't matter how many times I've been there; I've still gotten lost. There's always some renovations going on and just different ways of getting into the station that sometimes, you can just get lost. That's not really a good thing, especially if you're a tourist trying to find your way around, but I promise you that you'll always figure out where you are here. After all, it's just a train station and a concert hall, no big deal, right?
6. The High Line
What's The High Line? It's a park that used to be the West Side Line of the New York Central Railroad. This railway didn't have much more use for the city, so they thought, "Hey why not just make it a park?" A little weird? Yes, but it's a nice place to go to just to have a better view of downtown, or walk through on a date, or just if there's legitimately nothing else better to do for a day. It's also a nice place for photoshoots. When I was there, I saw a couple of model photo shoots, probably just to advertise new clothing brands or maybe just girls who payed photographers for the sole purpose of posting on Instagram. Whatever the case may be, The High Line is a unique and pretty place to hang out in. And don't worry, a train won't come out of nowhere and hit you while you're sitting on the grass; the tracks are still there, just without the trains
7. Lips
This isn't a lipstick store. This isn't a hidden Victoria's Secret modeling studio. This is a drag queen performance place. But it's not just a small club in the middle of nowhere. When you walk through the door, you're brought into a restaurant with a stage in the front under a thousand rainbow, strobe lights, with the screen on stage displaying several popular music videos. When I was there for my cousin's bachelorette party, the performers emulated Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Whitney Houston, Katy Perry, etc. Let me tell you, it was so funny and a lot of fun. The main performer went up to every birthday girl or boy, bride to be, and honeymooner, and talked to them for a minute with the most hilarious jokes and attitude ever. And last but not least, they have the best baked ziti in the city, I guarantee you. This place is a huge party; that's how I describe it.
8. The View
You might get scared of this restaurant's description: it's a revolving dining area in a building's forty-eighth floor that overlooks Times Square. I know what you're thinking: "REVOLVING?! THAT HIGH UP??" I promise that it's not what you think. It is indeed high up in a particular building, but it doesn't revolve like a roller coaster. It revolves so slow that you don't even realize you're moving in circles. Trust me, you can have a normal conversation with someone at a table without motion sickness acting up. And as for the height, you're not hanging off a the building like on that Vegas ride. The View lives up to its title; it has an excellent view of the city and is a nice place to go all classy for a date.
I've always loved New York. I say to this day that I wish my family and I had still lived there, but I'll always be thankful that I now live only an hour away by train. Yes, it's expensive when you travel into this city, but it's worth the time as long as you keep an open mind and go there to explore. Don't just go to Times Square or just one Broadway show; even though those are definitely fun and interesting things to do in the city, they're not the only thing it has. Go to some of these crazy places and you'll never forget about your experience in New York.
