7 Things You Don't Tell Your Dad Often Enough

Even when we don't say it, we love and appreciate you.

7 Things You Don't Tell Your Dad Often Enough
Ashlan Smith

I have been living in Abilene for a month now, and missing home doesn't get any easier. I'm close with my family especially my mom. A mother and daughter relationship is a bond that can't be broken, you can't compare it to anything. I'm the closest with my mom, throughout life she is the first person that I would run to. I feel like I don't share the same bond with my dad as I do with my mom, and here are some things that I don't tell my dad often enough.

1. Thank you.

I never said thank you enough. You sacrificed so much for our family, and you worked so hard and you worked many long hours so that we could have the best life that we can have. Thank you for always supporting me with everything that I did. Thank you for being my coach, my number one fan, my friend, and most importantly my dad.

2. You will always be my superhero

When I would fall off my bike, you would help me back up and you wouldn't let me give up. When I would get hurt you would always be there and wipe away my tears. 19 years later and you're still the best superhero ever.

3. I will always be your little girl.

To dancing on your feet when I was little, to sitting on the couch watching sports. To falling asleep in your arms, and waking up miraculously in my bed. From the day I was born, to my first day of school, to my high school graduation, to move-in day at college, to the day I'm walking down the aisle. I will always be your little girl no matter how old I am.

4. You are the best comedian in my book.

All of your jokes, and your old stories that you tell over and over again. They are still funny enough to catch a small laugh from me.You can make anyone smile or laugh, and that's what I miss most about you.

5. You are my role model

You are the most hard working person that I know, when bad things happen in life you don't let it stop you. You overcome so many obstacles in life, and you always come home with a big smile on your face. You don't let anything or anyone change who you are.

6. I'm sorry.

I'm sorry for not spending time with you that much in high school. I'm sorry for being on my phone when you were talking to me. I'm sorry for all the times that I have hurt your feelings, when I didn't mean to. I'm sorry for not coming home on the weekends to visit you. I'm sorry for not calling or texting you. I'm sorry for not taking advantage of the time I had with you when I was living at home.

7. I love you

I don't say it as much as I should, but you should always know that I will always love you dad.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
