One of the most important milestones in a child’s life is their first best friend. From being in the same elementary school classes, to playdates and sleepovers on the weekends. There seems to be one specific person that stands out as that one best bud you did everything with. Although you may not talk to them now, or they’re still your sidekick, here are seven things you need to thank your childhood best friend for.
1. Thank you for making sleepovers something to look forward to.
Every weekend, our sleepovers consisted of "Lizzie Maguire," too much candy, and random dance parties. We’d get yelled at for staying up until 3 a.m., but we didn’t care; we had to talk about the cute boys at school. Now that we’re in college, our sleepovers still consist of "Lizzie Maguire," but we're too exhausted from school work to make it until 3 a.m.
2. Thank you for always being my plus one on vacations.
On all family vacations, each sibling got to bring a friend, and you were always my first pick. I needed the best person to build sandcastles with on the beach and roam the boardwalk with at night. Because of this I know I can count on you to be my plus one at all the weddings we’ll be invited to during our 20s. We may not want to go, but at least we have the best date.
3. Thank you for always having a shoulder for me to cry on.
Of course that boy you said was no good would break my heart, but you were there to comfort me while telling me, “I told you so.” Growing up is full of tears, but having someone to cry with, makes it so much better.
4. Thank you for making me a part of your family
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's would not be complete without spending time with each other’s family. Birthdays are ALWAYS celebrated with a present and dinner, even if it has to be weeks after the actual day.
5. Thank you for making me laugh.
We still remember the “inside jokes” we made when we were 8, we still use them, and they will never be outdated.
6. Thank you for taking endless pictures with me.
Braces, glasses, bad hair dos, and even worse make-up habits are documented with thousands of pictures on our home computers. Looking back on them makes me thankful for puberty, and thankful we spent hours improving our beauty skills at sleepovers. Now, we’ve been friends long enough to know which pose makes for the best picture, and which filters makes us look more tan.
7. Thank you for teaching me what true friendship is.
