7 Things That Aren't Actually Funny

If you do the following, you have a lot to reevaluate about yourself.

7 Things That Aren't Actually Funny

I'm mad. And why? Maybe because this generation is so disrespectful that everyone seems to be so desensitized by actual issues and topics that should never be the butt of a joke. The following are actual examples I've heard and experienced in my dorm:

1. Child abuse: "If you keep it up, we'll repeat what Adrian Peterson did to his son."

I will never understand how a defenseless child being hit, starved, trapped, and beaten is funny? Is it funny that these kids grow up in fear of their guardians or parents? Do you see how damaging it is for kids to grow up under abuse?

Adrian Peterson being accused of beating his child is not a joke. Being physically harmed is an outrage and against all human rights. But to do that to a child is absolutely despicable.

Abuse also includes psychological, emotional, and physical abuse. When you have to live your life in fear, that’s not living. Having someone harm you in any way is not OK, so why do so many people think it’s hysterical?

Please tell me what’s so comical about a child having to grow up in a harmful environment

2. Rape: "Fire, fire, I'm being raped!"

I’ve noticed a lot of guys think this is a fun topic. So it’s funny to have someone penetrate another person against his or her will? It’s funny to be taken advantage of and have someone sexually assault another person without consent? I think otherwise.

Rape is not funny. It never has been. It never will be. Both genders have been subjected to this horrifying act, but yet, so many people still think it’s OK to scream “Rape!” when someone sits on them or embraces them jokingly.

There are so many people, women especially, who live in fear of being attacked while walking alone at night. There are countless people who are afraid to come forward to report an incident, out of fear of being blamed or called a liar. There are so many people who do not feel safe because of past experiences with this damaging experience. Molestation and rape are real issues that need to be reported and dealt with sensitively.

I hope none of you when jokes about this topic will ever have a friend, child, sibling, or loved one who has experienced rape. It's not a joke.

I wish guys were as disgusted with rape as much as they are with periods…

3. Disabilities: *uses R-word in hopes of seeming smarter*

Again, someone being born with any type of handicap doesn’t deserve your harassment. Maybe you should appreciate the life you were given and become a decent human being, instead of making fun of those who cannot help the way they were born. Calling someone the R-word doesn’t make you any smarter.

4. The LBGQT community: "Stop being so gay."

I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Someone’s sexuality is their business. Who they date, who they sleep with, who they’re attracted to, that does not define the person they are. There’s nothing wrong with being gay, a lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, asexual, queer or questioning. Just like how there’s nothing with being heterosexual.

It’s not a choice, a “phase,” or a simply a lifestyle. Being a straight woman isn’t m choice or lifestyle, because I’m a person, not just labeled by my sexuality or identity. And I didn't realize calling someone gay was an insult? Thank you for showing us all how illiterate and myopic you are. "Dude, you're so gay" being said by straight and annoying guys doesn't make you more manly. There's nothing wrong with being gay, actually. So why is it such a common insult? No, please elaborate.

This is a community of people who need to be represented and deserve respect. Get over yourself.

5. Eating Disorders: "You're not hungry? Stop being anorexic."

Having voices in your head telling you not to eat isn’t funny. Forcing yourself to binge and then reject food isn’t funny. Making food the enemy and being obsessed with having the perfect body isn’t funny. So many people struggle with insecurities, but so many others struggle with eating disorders behind closed doors. This is an issue that has to be treated with love and understanding. This is an illness, which needs to be addressed immediately before someone loses his or her life to it. “I’m going to starve myself until I get into that shape” is a not something you should ever say, OK?

6. Addictions: "I look like a meth addict."

I’m keeping this one short and sweet.

I’ve seen my father struggle with alcoholism. It’s a real disease that destroys lives and can result in suicide, jail time, DUIs, and premature deaths. Drugs can take people away just as easily, if not faster.

The body can easily succumb to addictions and it should never be joked about. These are real struggles that real people deal with everyday. You’re straight up disrespectful if you can say that addictions aren’t a big deal or you make a joke about them. Addictions can harm lives in more ways than you think.

7. Mental health: "You're so bipolar!"

I don’t know when these became funny, but saying someone is bipolar just because their mood changes isn’t a joke. There are thousands of people who battle anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and many others on a daily basis. How about we support everyone in their individual struggles and try to help them as much as we can?

None of these things are funny and it hurts my heart that people think it's OK. In this society, no one has respect for anyone else. Making jokes about serious topics don't accomplish anything other than making yourself look dumb, so please save us all a lot of frustration and check yourself.

If you're still using any of these, you really need to reevaluate the type of person you are, because it isn't OK.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
