I have never been known as "girly." Tomboy has become part of my identity. When given the option of cute or comfort I will always pick comfortable clothing. My favorite animal is a snake and I don't mind being the one to kill the spider. When I do dress up I look fabulous, but that's only every now and then. Make up is a rare thing and I barely know the basics.
People have certain views about tomboys and thus I tend to be asked or told certain things, some of which on a regular basis. Let's take a look, shall we?
1. "I can make you look so pretty. Just let me do your make up!"
Okay I don't know where people get the whole "You aren't as pretty without make up," but it needs to stop. Make up makes you look different, maybe give you confidence, but I certainly don't need it to be pretty. Also, I suck at make up so I would probably look worse with my make up skills.
2. "Are you lesbian?"
No. Just no. Flowers and frills does not equal straight and flannel and jeans don't equal lesbian. Just saying. Stop. Even though people may not straight out ask me about this, their looks and glances speak enough volumes.
3. "Do you wear anything other than t-shirts and jeans?"
Yes, but not often. I like t-shirts and jeans. I find them super comfy and I would rather be comfy than... Pink... I have dress clothes in my closet, yes, but that isn't my primary wardrobe. Chill is my own style, and that's okay.
4. "Do you just hate dresses?"
Let me tell you something: It is actually harder to not wear dresses than to wear dresses sometimes. If I'm mixing a shirt and a pair of pants, i have to make sure they match. It's hard to mismatch a single article of clothing. That being said, I would rather wear pants because of comfort.
5. "WOW! You should wear dresses more often."
No thanks, I don't enjoy chafing and the dress flying up over my face.
6. "What?! You don't like (insert chick flick title)!?!?"
No. They are fake. That stuff does not happen, I don't care how romantic your guy is, it will never be like how it is on the screen. The whole point is a way of imagining how it can't be in real life. I don't like that. It gives false hope of things that won't happen. Ever.
7. "It's just a phase. You'll learn to love girl stuff."
I have been a tom boy my whole life. I played T-ball (I was awful at it by the way), and I used to sit in the outfield picking up bugs and playing with them. I will forever be a tom boy, even if my job may call for non-tom boy practices, it will always be who I am. Accept me the way I am or don't. It won't change me at all.
