It's no secret that the Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest sporting events of the year; it is the what the state of Kentucky is known for. The Derby draws people from all over and all kinds of people, from college students to high-profile celebrities. Whether you are drawn by the social environment or the beautiful horses, there is nothing quite like the environment of the Kentucky Derby. With my first derby now under my belt, let me tell you some things you find out as a first time derby goer.

1. Be prepared to walk after you find a place to park.

We had to walk nearly a mile after we parked. However, there are shuttles that cost extra that will take you as close to Churchill Downs as they can get with the crowds and streets blocked off.

2. Don't expect to get inside quickly; the crowds and the process take some time.

After forcing our way through the crowd outside the gate, security guards checked our bags and scanned us with a metal detector, so it took quite a while to get inside.

3. Come with lots of money, but not more than you're willing to lose.

From betting on horses to paying for parking, shuttles, drinks, snacks, and any souvenirs, a day at the derby will cost you a small fortune.

4. Wear comfortable shoes.

Especially if you are in the infield and don't have any chairs or a blanket to sit down on, you will be standing and walking around all day. Props to you if you can survive those hours in heels.

5. Bring some snacks and drinks to save some money.

A bottle of water for five dollars? A bag of small chips for three? I'd rather not pay that if I can bring my own. Bringing snacks and drinks will save you quite a bit of money, so you have more to bet on horses.

6. Lawn chairs and/or a blanket are a must for the infield.

Having a place to sit in the infield will save your feet; you don't have to sit all day, but having the option to sit would be very nice.

7. Learn how to bet on horses beforehand.

I had no clue what all the different odds meant or how to go about betting on a horse, so I was slightly embarrassed when I got to the window and didn't know what I was doing.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
