7 Things Incoming Freshmen Should Expect

So, you're an incoming Freshman, and you're starting to unpack your items - first night to be independent. Get it, homie!

1. Food

Obviously it's one of the more important things, but it's definitely not going to be as good as a home-cooked meal. It comes close, but there's a little lack of some spice; there's no kick.

2. Friends

Don't worry. It's intimidating coming to a new area where you have no idea who anyone actually is. But, they're actually very friendly! (Just make sure to stray from those who haven't had their cup-o-jo.)

3. Parties

First party of the semester... Get that sh*t, yo! It's awkward at first, which is normal. No one is expecting you to have a drink in your hand, but if you do, take it slowly! Definitely learn your limits toward the beginning of the year - don't be that freshman.

4. Rooming

You may, or may not, have a roommate. Try to become friends! He or she may not be your best friend, but do not make him/her your first enemy. Remember, you have to live with that person for the next 17 weeks!

5. Bathrooms

Communal bathrooms... It's definitely something to get used to! Make sure you have a cubby to hold your items (soap, luffa/washcloth, shampoo and conditioner - your essentials) and a pair of shower shoes! You definitely do not want to be caught walking barefoot in those showers (athlete's foot is no joke).

6. Laundry

We all have to have clean clothes, unless you don't (which, you probably should). Have laundry detergent and dryer sheets because no one likes wrinkly clothes - unless you're a senior, and all f*cks have been thrown out the door. Prep for doing laundry; don't do it on Sunday's because all of those hungover students need to clean the vomit off of their sheets/clothes. Plan to do it during obscure hours - either early in the day, or late at night.

7. Money

Unless you have a job or a work-study, you're broke as a joke. Don't worry about asking for money from your parents, but make sure you get your sh*t together before you get yourself even further in debt - not just from tuition. Textbooks are no joke! Get them at least a week ahead of time because before you know it, you're a week into class, and you're sitting there without one.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
