Going home for the holidays is exciting and much anticipated. After the dreadful week of finals, there is nothing like walking into your house in your hometown, surrounded by the people you love. While the holiday break may be short, here are a few things to try to squeeze into your time at home:
1. Make your parents a meal.
For some reason, food tastes better when you didn't make it. We all look forward to home cooking, but it would be a nice holiday treat to surprise your parents with a home cooked meal. Meal hack: frozen lasagna will suffice.
2. Go back to your high school.
It won't be long until you graduate college and have the potential to move far from your hometown. You want to re-visit your high school while you are still in college so that you aren't that weird 25-year-old walking around the hallways. Visit with old teachers and thank the ones that helped you get to where you are today.
3. Get together with friends and repeat old memories.
Meet up with your old buddies and do things that you guys did in the past. Hang out in what used to be your "go to" basement, eat at your favorite spots and even open up Facebook and look back at your time together in the past. If you are in college and lucky enough to still have good friends back home, take advantage of that.
4. Spend a day doing nothing.
Spend an entire day on the couch watching tv with your parents. Sleep in, relax and don't leave the house. College is crazy and busy and taking time to relax during the holidays is important. Also, your parents will love having you around.
5. Read for fun.
Pick a book or two that you've wanted to read but haven't had the time for. With homework, tests and class reading it is nearly impossible to read for leisure during the academic year. The holiday break is a great time to get in bed early and read a book for the fun of it.
6. Look through old family albums.
Take the walk down memory lane with old family pictures. Invite your parents or siblings to join for some extra laughs.
7. Appreciate your time at home.
The break is short so take the time to enjoy yourself at home. It is a small window of time before the next academic semester, so relax and have fun at home.
