The competition is on for the 2016 Song of the Summer. A tradition of Billboard that declares the top chart hit of the song that manages to hold the #1 stop on the top 100 from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The song of the summer is about being catchy as much as it's about timing. It's that song that is always on the radio and your mom knows every word. The Song of the Summer, can truly define a summer. Just the sound of a certain song can be the terms for a flashback or wave of nostalgia in remembrance of some truly great summers. Here are 7 past Songs of the Summer that you probably forgot you loved (until you got sick of hearing it of course).
2009: "I Got a Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas
It's hard to believe 2009 was 7 years ago but what's easy to remember to cranking the radio to "I've Got a Feeling," the 2009 Song of the Summer. It was a truly great year for the Black Eyed Peas as they were only in a competition with themselves with their song "Boom Boom Pow" at #2 competiting for the title that year
2010: "California Gurls" by Katy Perry
Driving with the windows down screaming "oh-o-oh-o-oh-o" to "California Gurls" by Katy Perry is certain to spark some memories, if not for the crazy video alone.
2011: "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO
This Song of the Summer almost got lost in the shuffle when competing with "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" at numbers #2 and #3 repectivitely. However, LMFAO managed a win in 2011 with their hit "Party Rock Anthem."
2012: "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen had one of the most notable Song's of the Summer. Her hit "Call Me Maybe" was truly unforgettable. No matter how many times the song was played it was impossible not to turn up the radio and sing along, even if you hated it. "Call Me Maybe" was a viral hit and made for an unforgettable summer.
2013: "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke
Before becoming a controversy, no one could stop jamming to Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" as the Song of the Summer in 2011. It was hard not to sing "HEY HEY HEY" and joke about things that do and don't rhyme with "hug me." Unfortunately, the song is basically a parody at this point and has gone on to spark numerous debates about what is and isn't feminism. In terms of the Song of the Summer, however, it was jam unable to be beat by "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons and "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.
2014: "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea
Everyone swears they're not an Iggy Azalea fan, yet Fancy swept the charts at #1 to win Song of Summer. Iggy even stay on the charts competing with herself at #3 on the song "Problem" with Ariana Grande. Another crowd favorite was MAGIC!'s "Rude" at the #2 spot.
2015: "Cheerleader" by OMI
Competition was harsh last year with "See You Again" by Wiz Khalfia and Charlie Puth leading most of the season just to be kicked out of #1 by crowd pleaser "Cheerleader" by OMI. "Cheerleader" rose quickly to be a hit, even beating out contender Taylor Swift with "Bad Blood."
2016: The competition has just begun
The battle begins for this years Song of the Summer. Remember official counts don't start until Memorial Day. If you ask me, early contenders could be "Work from Home" by Fifth Harmony, "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" by Mike Posner, "Never Forget You" by Zara Larsson and MNEK, and even "Panda" by Desiigner is picking up speed. However, #1 on the Top 100 is Justin Timberlake with his new song "Cant Stop the Feeling!" Close behind is Drake at #2 with "One Dance" and Desiigner at #3 with "Panda."
