Everyone wants to go to the music festivals. We all want to be in charge of the aux cord, and some of us even stay up all night when we know a new album is dropping. We wouldn’t dream of going on a road trip without our favorite playlists and we worship those in the music business. Ok, so music is pretty much everywhere, but WHY are we so obsessed with it?
7. BECAUSE IT’S FUN.
What was life if you and your friends didn’t pretend to be the cheetah girls while singing “Strut” and “Cinderella?” Did you even have a childhood if you didn’t scream this sh** is BANANAS B A N A N A S”? And life was especially amazing when you got your hands on that Hilary Duff Metamorphosis CD.
6. Your taste in music makes you unique.
There’s so much pressure to like what everyone else likes, or like what’s being played ten times a day on the same three radio stations. S BUT, thanks to Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, and ITunes, you are free to listen to whatever you like and no one has to know! There are a few playlists in my ITunes library that I know my friends would hate.
We also have the option of consuming music in pretty much anyway we want. Some people like to stream and some people even want to buy vinyls ( yes, this is still a thing). We all have a different way of getting access to our music which gives it a personal connection.
5. You always have something to talk about in awkward situations.

4. You can sing as loud as you want and make a fool of yourself.
I mean really, how awkward would frat parties be if there was no music to blast obnoxiously loud while you and your friends make fools out of yourselves on the dance floor? The music at a party sets the whole vibe, and it’ probably the only thing you have in common with a bunch of strangers. I know I’m not from the 6, but I certainly feel like it when Drake comes on at a party and everyone is suddenly RUNNING THROUGH THE 6 WITH MY WOES.
3. It provides an escape when you need it most.
Let’s be honest, we all have those days when were really just not in the mood to listen to our friends talk about their relationship problems or hear that one girl at lunch who chews her food really loud. That’s why we have headphones right ? To signal to others “please leave me alone, I do not wish to speak to you right now.” Thank you music, for allowing us to ignore the outside world, even just for a little.
2. It provides you with a soundtrack for your memories.
You know what I mean... you’ve almost forgotten about that ex- boyfriend and then BAM your song comes on in the car and suddenly you’re 16 again. Those memories that you’re sure are long gone don’t seem so far away anymore. Even if he did end up breaking your heart, it’s nice to be reminded of your good times. “Funny how a melody sounds like a memory, like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night..” ( Springsteen, Eric Church)
1.Sometimes it makes you want to cry (and that’s okay!)
We all need a good cry eventually, and what better way than with a sappy Adele track playing in the background? Even when you’re at your lowest, you are guaranteed to find comfort through song lyrics that somehow explain exactly what you’re feeling. Music shows us were not so alone after all.
