You’ve probably heard it before a thousand times but have you ever thought about how accurate this statement really is? These people know everything about you. And I mean EVERYTHING from what you ate for lunch to that time you accidentally tweezed your entire left eyebrow off. They know which cabinets have the best snacks in your house, and they probably have more of your clothes in their car than you have in your own closet. These people aren’t just your friends: they are a part of you.
1. They tell you the truth. The WHOLE truth.
When you need brutal honesty, these are the people you go to. Yes, those pants do give you massive love handles. Or, yes, you do look incredibly stupid for getting back with your ex for the EIGHTH time. But these are also the people that give the best compliments, like, you’re having great eyelash night (the best compliment in existence.) Or, the rack is a 10/10 in that shirt. Whichever end of the spectrum you’re looking for, they gotchu.
2. They bring you back down to Earth.
Yes, it would be amazing to lose five pounds for a party in two days, but let's be real, it isn’t going to happen. They will encourage you in wanting to better yourself, but also remind you not to get too ahead of yourself. Sadly, you’re not gonna have a six pack by the weekend, but you will look bomb for summer vacation in a few months if you keep it up.
3. They have been there for your biggest milestones.
From showing up to Driver’s Ed incredibly hungover (God bless sophomore year me, sorry if you’re reading this mom) to failing your permit test, (Why are mopeds relevant anyway?) to freaking out the night before your license test only to wake up the next morning at 6 a.m. and pass. From being infatuated with the senior boy who (looking back, very creepily) messaged you on Facebook to your first serious relationship. From your first job at Market Basket to experiencing your first death in the family. They’ve been there through it all with you and vice versa.
4. They forgave you for never taking their advice and giving him “another” chance.
They probably hate the piece of sh** guy that played you more than you do and they probably cringed every single time you gave him a “second chance,” but they never failed to tell you that although you are in fact an idiot for taking him back yet again, you still deserve so much more than he is giving you. They were still there to comfort you when he was playing with your head and assure you that it would blow over (even though it would probably happen all over again in a few weeks.) They were there to give him dirty looks in the hallway and they were most certainly there to celebrate when you said see ya once and for all.
5. They constantly remind you of your worth.
If you’re having a bad week, they are there to pick you up when you need it. Often times we are hardest on ourselves and fail to see our best qualities. Luckily, we have our lovely high school friends to remind us that even though you may feel like ’07 Britney right now, you really are a 2014 Emma Watson; classy, fabulous and capable of earning a degree from Brown! (ok maybe not BROWN, but you get it). They never lose sight of your strengths, (even though you might) and never fail to remind you of them in your time of need.
6. They can tell you what’s wrong with you before you even know what’s wrong with you.
Forever grateful for this one. It’s like therapy, only free. The fact that you don’t like your outfit ruined your whole night out. Or, you’re still thinking of that argument with so and so from a few days ago. Or maybe, you’re just extremely over tired. Or, just being a raging b***h ‘cause it’s one of those days. You name it, they called it first.
7. They are more than just your best friends
They’re family, and they’re a part of you. They ultimately helped shape you into the person you are today, and I’m willing to bet they know you better than you know yourself. Like for example if they hadn’t told you that your bottom eyeliner looked horrendous, you would probably still be wearing it to this day (thank you for that). They have witnessed some of your greatest moments, and some of your worst, but are still by your side. These are the people that you know will be in your wedding, the people you call when you’re in an awkward situation and need to pretend to be on the phone to avoid eye contact. They are your go to’s for just about everything under the sun, and unlike any other friends you'll ever have.
To my high school friends, my best friends, you know who you are and I am forever grateful for all of you. You have changed my life and made it that much brighter. I love you all and could never replace you!
