We all have a little nerd inside of us crying to get out. Here are seven ways to satiate that little dude on the daily:
1. Read the "Word of the Day:" Dictionary.com publishes a unique word every day. Learn them, and you’ll be the sexy, mysterious guy or girl who no one understands, but everyone admires. (That’s how it works, right?) Or, if you want to widen your street slang, follow Urban Dictionary on Instagram to see words like “potate,” “luckfully,” and “truuuu.”2. Do the math: When you shop, calculate sales in your head. Double check with your phone calculator to be sure, but don’t hunt down a sales associate without trying to figure it out yourself first. Don’t let the one relevant thing you learned in math class go to waste.
3. Read at least one book per month: Constantly fill your brain with new concepts and philosophies. If reading isn’t really your thing, try out an audiobook. Many libraries are now streaming through free apps, so you don’t even have to pay.
4. Go thrift shopping: What used to be considered lame is back in style, as are tons of the pieces you’ll find at your local Goodwill. Not only will thrifting score you the best prices, but it’s also environmentally friendly. Make an extra effort to find hole-in-the-wall shops unique to your area – they can have the most unique pieces!
5. Write your name on your stuff: Just do what your mother taught you and label your belongings. There’s probably a landfill somewhere dedicated to lost socks, water bottles, and pairs of gloves.
6. Learn a bit of coding: Coding used to be reserved for computer geeks, but now it’s going mainstream, and you want to be in on this transition. Not only is coding a practical life skill, but it is also highly desired by future employers.
7. Freaking LOVE something: As John Green says, “Nerds are allowed to love stuff like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it…When people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness.'” So take your pick, whether it’s yoga or a BBC TV show or your pet fish. Just love something with all of your being and be thankful for your ability to do so.
