Leaving for college means having to say a lot of goodbyes. And while we’re all excited about meeting new people and making lasting friendships with our college classmates, no one beats our day-one best friend from home. The friend who was by your side through your awkward phase in high school, the friend who showed up at every family occasion because they basically lived at your house anyway, the friend who you cruised around endlessly with when you first got your driver’s license, and the friend who made going away to college especially hard. Not going to school with the same person who has been your partner in crime for all these years can be tough, especially when college life gets overwhelming. So if you’re experiencing a serious case of separation anxiety from your best friend, scroll down to see six of the best ways to deal with it.
1. Schedule FaceTime sessions at least once a week.
FaceTime is a great resource for
re-connecting with your BFF and making sure you are both updated on each
other’s lives. Plan out a time at least once a week that works in both of your
busy schedules for a major talking session. Virtually snuggle up in bed with
some ice cream and your best friend and it’ll be just like one of your usual
sleepovers. Talk about everything that
has happened in the past week and throw in some gossip about the cute boy in
your economics class,
and it’ll feel like you’re both never missing out on anything.
2. Decorate your dorm walls with pictures of you and your best friend.
You probably have a ton of pictures with your best friend so why not cover your boring dorm room walls with them? It’s not only an easy way to spice up your room, but also, constantly seeing pictures of your favorite memories with your best friend is an easy way to ease the separation anxiety and remind you that more memories are to come.
3. Send your best friend a care package of all their favorite foods.
Surprise your best friend with a fun
and thoughtful package of yummy goodies you know they won’t be able to
resist. It’ll show your bestie just how much you miss them and that you haven’t
forgotten all of their guilty-pleasure snacks. Plus, if they’re truly your best
friend you’ll probably receive one in return so it’s a win-win situation for
the both of you.
4. Get college-appropriate friendship bracelets for each other.
You two probably spent your lunch periods in middle school making each other friendship bracelets because we all know the power friendship bracelets have. Who said that they have to stop once you get to college though? Update your friendship jewelry with a sophisticated and pretty bracelet or necklace engraved with the coordinates of each other’s schools. It’s a subtle reminder that even though your BFF may be hundreds of miles away, she’s always still connected to you.
5. Post Instagram throwbacks of you and your bestie for #TBT.
Recover those good old selfies of
your and best friend from the back of your camera roll and post them for “Throwback Thursday.”
It will remind you and your bestie of all the things you’ve been through, and
also show everyone that your friendship is still going strong despite the
distance.
6. Plan weekend trips to visit each other.
One of the best parts of going to different schools is having an excuse to plan weekend getaways to visit each other. Schedule a few weekends a semester and alternate who visits who. Spend time together exploring each other’s college towns and showing off your best friend to your new college friends. You’ll get to reunite with your best friend and take on college life together even if it’s just for a weekend. Follow these six tips and college won’t be able to get in the way of keeping up your relationship with your best friend, and nothing is better than feeling like you didn’t even leave your best friend for college when you finally reunite after the semester is over.
