This past Saturday, an alternative radio station in Philadelphia called 104.5 hosted its "Ninth Birthday Show" at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey. Fans of Twenty One Pilots, The Front Bottoms, AWOLNATION, Mutemath, Catfish and The Bottlemen and more could be found dancing it up on the venue's lawn or crowd surfing in general admission. Food, drinks and merchandise could be purchased at every corner (of course overpriced - my friend bought a slice of pizza for $8.50), and a day that almost seemed cursed with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms (with the last concert hosted by 104.5 being cancelled due to thunderstorm warnings) turned into nine hours of music and good vibes - every music lover's dream. Here are some great moments birthday show goers experienced at this year's annual festival.
- A very kind person from 104.5 announced before The Front Bottoms played that fans were allowed to move into the Pit (general admission) while the night was still young, which meant that my friends and I ended up dancing five rows away from TFB.
- Brian Sella, the lead singer of TFB, destroyed his guitar in a fit of festival frenzy at the end of their set, causing a cacophony of applause from fans.
- Inside the BB&T Pavilion, The Fillmore (another concert venue in Philadelphia) was giving out two free concert tickets to those who signed up for their newsletter. Tim Williams, Chad Burtch, and Ryan Star - I’ll be seeing you on August 21.
- During Twenty One Pilots' set, Tyler Joseph walked onto (yes, onto) the crowd in a plastic, see-through ball causing feelings of jealousy from fans looking on from the lawn. I mean sure, there’s the possibility of next day bruises, but who wouldn’t want Joseph walking on their head?
- Twenty One Pilots performed their cover of "Can’t Help Falling in Love With You" (originally sung by Elvis Presley), prompting feels from fans of the band who watched that cover’s music video and for a moment felt like the fans captured in the video, singing along in harmony with Joseph.
