There are so many stereotypes surrounding the title "only child". Some bad, some good, but it's totally fine because I honestly will own up to most of them. There are just some things that only someone who is an only child will understand.
You are spoiled.
If your parents are anything like mine with only one child to buy for, it can get a little out of hand. I mean, I'm not complaining but I could probably go a year without repeating an outfit. I am spoiled, but that's only because I have no siblings that also need things.
"You must looove all of the attention your parents give you."
Don't even get me started. Try sneaking out or going somewhere you aren't supposed to be when your parents don't have any other kids to worry about. The spotlight is on you. If you ignore or don't answer your phone, they don't have another kid to focus their attention on so they are just going to keep trying. Good luck, but I'm telling you right now that the calls won't stop.
You hate sharing.
Growing up with no siblings means not having anybody to share with on a daily basis. Which to me, was great. Nobody stealing my clothes, my makeup, and most importantly my food. Even now, it's hard for me to give away a single french fry which might sound ridiculous but hey, it's my food not yours.
"Don't you love it?"
This is a question I am always torn on. To answer, yes. I do love not having to share, and not having to compete for attention with anyone (except maybe the dog sometimes). At the same time though, it would be nice to not always be by myself.
We know how to get what we want.
With cuteness comes power. Okay, and it may be a little easier to get something when you're the only one asking for it. I still agree with the previous statement, though.
Our pets become like siblings.
What's the next best thing to a brother or sister? A pet. They may not be able to drive you places, play Barbies with you, or pick you up from school but they're really good at not leaving your side. Awkward and lonely first day of school or graduation photo? Add a dog in there and it's just as if you were posing with a sibling. At least you'll know that you're never really home alone, just home alone with a four-legged furry friend.
