Depression is not something to be ashamed of, nor is it something to leave alone to let fester. I can tell you from personal experience the number of times that depression has taken something from me, someone from me. In light of that, here are a few things to remember about depression.
1. You have to realize that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You can never believe that you are alone in dealing with this monster. The minute that this happens is the beginning of the end and it is so damn hard to come back from that point. Possible, but so damn hard.
2. There are ways to make yourself better, it's just a matter of being diligent and dedicated enough to do what needs to be done. Surround yourselves with your friends and people that love you, there truly is no better medicine than laughter. At the very least, your friends and loved ones will sit through the junk with you. They want to help you, let them.
3. Do not ever keep it to yourself. Ever. Don't be ashamed to talk about what's going on. Having an uncomfortable conversation is worth it if it means that you can begin treatment and get better. It will only make you feel worse and worse about the person you are and worse about your situation, please tell someone. Before it's too late.
4. There are websites and hotlines that can get you through the darker days that you'll inevitably face while dealing with this mental illness.
5. It is a mental illness, and should be treated as such. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor or other medical professional about treatments.
6. The most important one of all, Don't Give Up. You can get through it; I did.
