After coming home from college and unpacking, spring cleaning 2.0 took place as I tried to clear out my closet, which had somehow accumulated more clothes since I'd been gone. Unfortunately, the Freshman 15 was a little too real, meaning a couple of my shorts were too tight for me to squeeze into -- but fortunately for me, it meant motivating me to get a gym membership and go on a shopping trip. Here are a couple of the summer fashion trends I've been ogling recently and can't wait to update my closet with.
1. Oversized Denim Jacket
I'm still on the hunt for the perfect fit, as most commercial stores sell the cropped version of this classic piece, but I'm determined to find the jacket and love it with all my heart. After watching Estee Lalonde's YouTube video on upgrading a denim jacket with patches, I fell back in love with this look. I think ironing on a couple of patches would be such a fun way to personalize and add a quirky touch to an old favorite. From dresses to a graphic tee with black skinny jeans, there's nothing this piece can't accentuate.
2. Chokers
OK, I know I'm going full '90s now, but as a kid born in '96, I feel like it may just be a result of growing up in the 2000's and riding off the fashion trends I didn't have enough time to appreciate. There's just something about a choker that completes any outfit. My personal favorite styles are those that either look like you just knotted some string together or tied some thick ribbon in the back (there's a literal DIY for you). I also love the look of more dainty, silver chokers and short necklaces layered on top of each other. As someone who forgets she has her ears pierced half the time, I feel like this is a good way for me to slowly wear more jewelry. I'm not going to lie, though -- if I look at pictures of chokers on the internet for too long, they start to creep me out.
3. Nude Nail Polish
Usually the only time I wear nail polish is when it gets cold out, which is when I break out my go-to reds because I'm already getting excited for Christmas. So although I normally just like to wear my nails natural in the summer, lately I've been really into nude nail polish. This probably started when I picked up Essie's Sand Tropez a couple of weeks ago. I always thought nude shades would look weird with my tan skin tone, but I actually think they work great as a neutral. I don't think I'll ever stop being amazed that they match literally everything -- not to mention, you feel so much more mature.
4. "Mom" shorts
New shorts are always a necessity in the summer. This higher-rise, looser-fitting style is honestly just so comfortable, and you never have to worry about anything hanging out. I'm obsessed with my regular wash, cuffed denim pair I got recently from Pacsun by the brand John Galt. I think a black ripped cut-off pair is on my wishlist next so I have something to wear all my basic white tees with.
5. Halter tops
At first, I wasn't sure what this high-neck cut was called, because the last time I checked the definition of halter tops, I got a flashback to tie-up swimsuit tops turned into shirts. Nevertheless, I'd say this modern version is much more flattering, and I actually prefer the square cut when it comes up to the neck in the back as well. I find this fit is more comfortable and easy to dress up with a cute pair of ankle boots and skinny jeans. Cropped versions are easy to throw on with jean shorts, and light knit materials give it a cool, textured twist.
6. Baseball caps
I've always been a fan of this casual look, but I never thought I was a baseball cap kind of girl; I was turned off because I thought my head looked weird in them. After going to a Neighbourhood concert and getting a dark grey distressed one, though, I left the past where it was meant to be and decided to try them again. They just look so cool! I want to add a white cap with black Vanderbilt lettering and a jean wash one to my collection to show my school spirit and fuel my continuing denim addiction (if you couldn't tell already).
