It's officially summer. Whether you're taking classes or just chilling for the next few months, there's a lot in store for you. One of which is preparing yourself to be a real adult. As a college student living on my own, I realized how important it is that you actually know how to cook at least one thing. Living off of microwavable meals is just not realistic, and cooking ramen or making mac and cheese on the stove doesn't really count as cooking. Knowing one real recipe will get you through at least two days a week that you won't be eating out of the microwave. In just 6 easy steps, I will teach you how to make a real adult meal.
Step 1: Pinterest.
Maybe you could find something on a recipe website, but Pinterest is way better. Whenever you're bored, distract yourself and hop on the site. Pinning food can even become a new hobby. Five hours later, you are hungry and will make the best adult meal ever, but don't forget to finish this tutorial first.
Step 2: Pick a recipe.
After you wasted time on Pinterest, you actually pick the recipe you want to make. This skinny spinach & artichoke dip is my favorite recipe on Pinterest, she even have one of those fun videos where she speeds everything up for you! It's the first thing Big Girl Vaughn learned how to make on her own. I even managed to make it for a family dinner and almost everyone ate it! Also, always double cheese, because cheese.
Step 3: Grocery shop.
Only go to Target if you want to leave with $100 worth of stuff you don't need and forget your main ingredient. I always reward myself, that if I get everything on my list, I get to buy cookies, too.
Step 4: Making the food.
This is honestly the most important step because if you don't do this, step five is irrelevant and you just wasted probably a whole day (if not more because sometimes it's really hard to decide what to make). So channel your inner Nicki and get to work.
Step 5: Instagram.
If you didn't Instagram your success at finally being a real adult and learning how to cook, did it even happen? Here's some tips for the best photo: make sure the lighting is perfect. If there's bad lighting, the food won't look as delicious. Angles are important too, depending on your dish you might want an overhead with arrangements. Also, don't forget to put #foodporn on your post because you know you did a damn good job.
*Pizza does not count as a big person meal
Step 6: Reheat and enjoy!
We all know it took you way too long to get the perfect Insta photo. Pop your dish in the microwave to reheat it and eat away.
If you succeeded, congrats! If not, find something else. Everyone needs a signature party dish or something you can bring along to a family dinner. Learning how to make a dish makes life easier for you because you'll always have a go-to meal to make and no one will every try to top your newfound specialty. Now go make something delicious!
