When you grow up in a small town, it’s pretty common to hear people complain about how badly they want to uproot their lives and move thousands of miles away for college. Hell, if you asked me a year and a half ago where I thought I was going to college I would tell you somewhere in the south, far far away from Rhode Island. With college tuition constantly rising, it isn’t always possible to go to your original first choice school. Here’s why going to college in your home state can actually turn into your dream school:
1. Your ass isn’t going to be in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when you graduate
More money to spend on useless things that I know I don't need.
2. When you’re feeling homesick you can always be home in a matter of hours
Especially when you live in the smallest state in the country (like myself), you can be home in a matter of 40 minutes.
3. Family and friends are always close by
As much as we all say we want to be independent and get away from what we know, the comfort of having the people we love nearby is reassuring.
4. You can be your out-of-state friends’ personal tour guide
About 99.9% of my college friends are from out-of-state, therefore it's up to me to show them the best beaches, restaurants, and other places to go around here. *humble brag*
5. Instead of spending money to travel home, you can spend that money on other fun, exciting vacations
Cabo? Punta Cana? Either way, I’m in.
6. You get a whole new sense of appreciation for your home state
If you told me I were staying in-state for college when I was in high school I probably would’ve laughed. Now I can’t imagine it being any other way.
