Like many who grew up in the early 2000s, "Gilmore Girls" was a staple of my childhood. I vividly remember buying all of the box sets and poring over them in a terrifyingly short period of time -- my introduction to the binge-watching age of television today, and a precursor to the days where Netflix had anything and everything on demand. But despite the glories that the show possessed -- the quick-wit, the pop culture references, the horrifying clothing choices -- something was missing for me (and, based on the surge of demands for a reboot, many others). So with the revival coming in just a few short weeks, and my Facebook feed overwhelmed with new footage and interviews and pictures from the set that changed my life, here are some reasons why this revival is the greatest.
1. Amy Sherman-Palladino is in charge of it again.
Famously, Sherman-Palladino and her husband (the creators of the series) left before its final season after disputes over contracts as the WB became absorbed in what is now the CW. Critics lamented this loss, and the final season suffered drastically for it; although the show was struggling in previous years, its final season was notoriously the worst, and the show's cancellation inevitably occurred. But with this new round of episodes, Sherman-Palladino is back at the helm, hopefully to avenge these beloved characters for us once and for all.
2. It's coming to Netflix, AKA a 6-hour-long bingefest in the making.
Rather than appearing on regular television as the original series did, forcing us all to suffer through an entire week of waiting for the next episode, Netflix is streaming all four of the 90 minute episodes on its service the day the show is set to air. It's every super-fan's dream.
3. All of the pop culture references will now be relevant.
One of the greatest (and most famous) parts about the original was the fast-paced, witty, reference-driven dialogue. And although for many watching at the time those references were obvious, it took me several rewatches (and not even then) to understand a lot of them. But now, as the show is premiering and taking place in 2016, there are so many puns in the making. Just think of the mockery the Gilmore women are about to make of Donald Trump. What a time to be alive.
4. The show always understood us, and now it gets to grow up with us, too.
This show was always one I related to so strongly, and therefore the generation that grew up watching it when it aired will now get to experience adult Rory and relate to her just as much as they did when she was sixteen. Plus, there will now be endless new scenes to quote to summarize our lives.
5. All of the loose ends get to be tied up -- including the romances.
The finale of the show left much to the imagination, especially in regards to the state of Luke and Lorelai's tumultuous relationship. But with these four new episodes spanning a year in the life of the Gilmores, we will not only get to see how the future played out for them, but also for the men in their lives; it has already been reported that Logan, Dean, and Jess will all be making appearances in the revival, so who knows what could happen? (Please, God, let it be Jess.)
6. It's a show that changed our lives, and now it gets to come back. What's better than that?
It was one of the most popular television shows of the time, and has become a classic thanks to the likes of Netflix. It's every TV show fan's dream to watch their favorite series be revitalized years later -- and "Gilmore Girls" has been given that gift. There's nothing more to celebrate than that.
