Choosing a college is probably one of the biggest decisions a high school student will make. While location, tuition, and school size all play major roles in the decision-making process, there are some other factors that could have an influence on your choice of school. When I was a senior in high school trying to decide what college I wanted to attend, several of my best friends chose the same university. I ended up joining them, and I couldn't be happier. Here's why going to college with your high school or middle school best friend is one of the greatest decisions you can make.
1. Everyone remembers their first night out freshman year. It's both exciting and scary - you are ready to find out what college is really about, but at the same time, you don't know how to make plans or who to hang out with. This is where having your best friend from home can really help. She'll be there for you to get ready and pregame with, and even if the two of you don't quite make it to that frat party, you'll still have a great time.
2. During the first week of classes, your college will most likely have something along the lines of an involvement or activity fair. Here, you will have the opportunity to check out groups and clubs that you might be interested in joining. It can be intimidating to attend an involvement fair alone, so it's nice to have your BFF with you. Even if you have different interests, you can walk up to the tables together so you'll feel less awkward meeting people and asking questions.
3. College is a great time to get in shape. Whether you and your BFF used to work out together in high school or you are interested in starting, it's great to have someone to go to the gym with for encouragement and motivation.
4. One really awesome thing about going to college with your high school bestie is that she already knows everything she needs to know about you. She doesn't ask questions when you really just aren't feeling a night out, and she knows to never set you up with a blonde guy unless she wants you to be reminded of your high school ex-boyfriend all over again. You don't have to offer explanations that might be awkward or painful, and you don't have to tell your breakup story for the millionth time.
5. Even as you and your BFF develop your own friend groups at college, you can still remain best friends. You might not see each other as frequently as you did in high school, but when you do get together it will be just like normal.
6. I think the best part about going to college with your high school bestie is that you get to enjoy another stage of life together. You'll probably make other friends, and you might not be attached at the hip anymore, but having your best friend right there whenever you need her is something that really can't be replaced.
