3 Netflix Shows That Changed My Life

An open letter to the Netflix binger

3 Netflix Shows That Changed My Life
Huffington Post

Netflix has been in my life for about three years now and I have compiled a list of shows that have affected me in some way.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD- you've been warned.

1. One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill became the show I couldn't stop watching. I went from hating Nathan Scott to loving him so much it hurt. To see a relationship like Nathan and Haley's go through so much (although it was dramatic at times) was so refreshing. It wasn't about sex or something to do with their ego. They were together because they made each other better people. Peyton and Lucas' love changed the viewer's mind about "undeniable romance." Peyton and Lucas always strayed from each other and found their way back every time. And, my favorite character, Brooke Davis went through the most life changing story of all. She went from a narcissist, party girl to a powerful woman. She learned to accept who she was and to follow her dreams even though she didn't have many people in her corner. She chose to drop Lucas (who was constantly cheating on her) and do better. That spoke to me more than anything... or the line "don't say I never gave you anything."

2. How I Met Your Mother

Don't get me started on the ending, but this show gives me "all the feels." From the blue french horn to the yellow umbrella, there is no way you can watch this show and not see the world just a tad differently. Ted Mosby (T-Mose the Architect) is telling the story of how he met his wife to their kids Luke and Penny. You get to see all the sides of adulthood. You see them grow as people, get their heartbroken, and maybe get engaged a few times. The thing that affected me the most was the truth in how dating really is. You can find a good person, but it doesn't mean they are the right person. You need to give yourself what you deserve and chase after what you want in life and in love.

3. Parks and Recreation

This show is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. I have a very dry sense of humor and the writers of the show played to that. In the show, you get to see a hardworking government employee Leslie Knope try to make her goals a reality. I love to see a female character with such persistence and no matter how many episodes I watch I am still inspired to go out and do more. Plus Ben and Leslie will always be my favorite couple.

So, to all the anti-TV people in this world, I have a message. Yes, I have spent many of my days sitting on the couch and watching Netflix, but these TV shows gave me some of the most important messages in my life. They can be used for comfort when you want to get away, or a distraction.

My advice is to turn on Netflix and watch at least one of these shows! Leave your recommendation in the comments so I can know what to watch next!

Honorable mention: Gossip girl, Dare Devil, Life Unexpected, Kevin from Work, and Dexter (which I am still working on).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
