By May, college students are itching to return their textbooks and head home for months of no responsibility -- until they realize that with summer come boredom, summer jobs, and the constant urge to eat one's weight in ice cream. Here are a few harsh realizations that summer brings.
Summer jobs aren't a walk in the park: As school draws to a close, students cannot wait to shut their minds off and return to a slower paced lifestyle. However, as people quickly learn, summer jobs are still work. Whether you're a waiter, retail store worker or babysitter, you have a job that must be done. It doesn't matter if you are serving Chicken Parmesan or are responsible for a HUMAN LIFE, you need to turn that brain back on and be aware of the task at hand. Despite realizing this hard fact at the start of every summer, we just as soon forget that these jobs actually qualify as "work" and aren't exactly relaxing. By the end of the summer, cracking open those textbooks doesn't sound as bad.
We use too much social media: During the school year, many people find tasks to keep them busy. Whether writing a huge paper, studying for a test, attending a meetin, or having a busy class schedule, we usually spread ourselves pretty thin. However, come summer, life slows down a bit and there is far less to keep us entertained. Enter the smartphone. In this day and age, the cure for boredom is to pick up your cellphone and choose one of 8,000 social media sites to browse through. Due to the slower lifestyle of summer, people are on their phones even more than usual (which is a lot to begin with). Not only does this excessive phone use cause strained eyes and a shorter attention span, it also causes parents everywhere to experience a surge in blood pressure when the dreaded phone service text is delivered alerting you that you are about to exceed your data plan. Use data responsibly, everyone. #EmbraceTheWifi
The overachievers stand out: Want to know how to feel inadequate? Seeing someone with a prestigious internship while you spend your day lying out by your sprinkler. Each summer, there is bound to be someone you know with a prestigious internship that makes you feel as if you have dropped the ball on your entire future. While some people enjoy their summers by hitting the beach and working on that golden tan, others spend their summers in business attire learning the ropes of a company. Thanks a lot, overachievers, for making us all feel so accomplished.
Fitness goals are not met: Many people set summer fitness goals. The weather is nice, there is more time to plan meals and home cooking proves much healthier than many college meal options. However, these summer goals are seldom met once people rediscover the magic that is ice cream. Ah, ice cream, you tempting mistress. People are left to decide between a washboard stomach or a Reese's flurry (spoiler alert: the Reese's flurry usually wins out). Oh, and that workout you wanted to squeeze in before work? You know the one that you set five alarms for? Yeah, not gonna happen. If getting up before 10 a.m. in the summer is wrong, then I don't want to be right. #SnoozeButton
You don't see your friends as much as you want to: Summer brings the excitement of seeing your friends all of the time. However, this usually isn't the case as friends have different work schedules and plans that conflict more often than not. For most, it's more likely that Snooki will get elected to Congress before you and all of your friends are in the same room again. Luckily, there's those incessant group texts that continue on into eternity, that allow friends to keep in touch despite the separation. While these group chats can be a blessing, they make naps much less enjoyable.
Study abroad jealousy is REAL: As some students are rolling quarters to save up for a mini vacation within their own state, some of their peers are taking pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. To those lucky enough to study abroad: we're happy for you (not really) and we are excited that you're experiencing culture at its finest (no we're not) but please cool it with the pictures of croissants and architecture, Xoxo your jealous social media friends.
