Almost everyone on this planet has heard of the Beatles -- as John Lennon said, they were "bigger than Jesus" at the height of their popularity. Since then thousands upon thousands of artists have covered and revamped their songs. The list below is by no means extensive, so if you have a favorite, let me know in the comments!
1. Bertolf Lentink: "Martha My Dear"
While not everybody knows this McCartney-penned, music-hall classic from the "White Album," Bertolf's cover is still worth checking out. This Dutch singer/songwriter manages to infuse the potentially saccharine song with a folk edge that can only be evocative of the Avett Brothers. Plus his translation of the piano lick to an acoustic guitar is genius. Check it out here:

2. Siouxsie and the Banshees: "Dear Prudence"
Siouxsie and the Banshees were a fixture of the early London punk scene, and their roots are glaringly obvious in this cover of a "White Album" staple. Gone are the ethereal acoustic guitars and subtle drums; with Siouxsie's vocals filtered and filtered, electric guitars twanging and drums filling the entire background, this cover saddens and yet even surpasses the original in some respects. 3. Florence + the Machine: "Oh! Darling"
McCartney's bluesy cord-buster of a song from "Abbey Road" gets a chamber pop makeover in this cover. Instead of the original Louisiana blues sound, the band tones it down and heightens the intimacy. Florence's plaintive vocals remove the blind rocking rage from the original and make it an aching torch song. Give it a listen here:

4. Jeff Beck: "A Day in the Life"
The magnum opus of "Sgt. Pepper" gets an incredible new twist from one of the kings of rock guitar in this cover from Julie Taymor's "Across the Universe." As much as I tried to avoid putting "Across the Universe" covers in this list, I couldn't leave this one out. Beck's wailing guitars add the perfect edge to what most people consider the Beatles' best song; if you've heard it before, then you can easily pick out every emotion in the guitar lines here. 5. Ed Sheeran: "In My Life"
Everyone's favorite English acoustic singer turns in another hit with this sweet Lennon song from "Rubber Soul." It's evocative of the original without copying it exactly, and Sheeran still keeps the wistful edge intact. You'll see at the end -- if Sir Paul loved it, you will too. Check it out here:

6. David Cook: "Eleanor Rigby"
The rocker from Season 7 of "American Idol" closes out this list with his cover of Eleanor Rigby from "Revolver," which he offered on his season of "Idol's" Lennon-McCartney week. It keeps the strings, but adds classic 2000s guitar licks that sound like Daughtry or Evanescence got their hands on it. Good stuff. Here it is:

Even though we can't come close to listing all the wonderful covers that are out there, I hope that this list gave you a little taste and inspires you to go hunting for more hidden gems. They're out there, I promise! If you've got a favorite I didn't list, let me know!
