The first week back at school can be rough for everyone, but especially for people who suffer from anxiety. For every student out there with anxiety issues, these six things can be major triggers for panic attacks. Just remember that you are not alone and you will get through this week!
1. Thinking about everything that could go wrong the night before.
And not being able to stop. You start to worry about everything. You question your major and your future and wonder why you are putting yourself through all of this.
2. Driving back to school.
And wanting to turn back home. You aren't ready to go back just yet, maybe in a week. Yeah, just one more week...
3. Seeing people again.
...people you really are not ready to deal with. Your ex shows up in the cafeteria, you pass the professor who failed you last semester on your way to class, and you are back to living with your psycho roommate.
4. Going to your first classes.
What will the professor be like? What if you don't have any friends? What if you are late? What if you go to the wrong classroom? What if you can't find a seat?
5. Going over the syllabus.
And seeing that there will be group projects and presentations. Of course, they are worth 40 percent of your grade, there is no way to get out of doing them, and now you get to anxiously wait until you have to confront them.
6. The professor announcing that you are going to do an icebreaker.
"Tell us about yourself!" — The most dreaded words for anyone with social anxiety. The icebreaker, the getting to know one another or whatever the professor calls it, is easily the worst part of the class.
The first week back at school might be the easiest week of the semester based on workload. But mentally, it may be the hardest. You can and will get through it and once you do, you can power through the next 14 weeks!
