Summer is officially over; or should I say, school is officially here. The sales on school supplies are winding down, the bookstore shelves are barren, and you're the only friend remaining of your hometown friend group. Or, perhaps you've already left home, in fact, you've been at school for the past two weeks. Either way, this is the year. That's right, THE year. It's the year you finally keep in contact with all of those awesome friends you've made over the summer. Perhaps you worked together, or maybe you met on an exotic vacation. Regardless, this is the year you stay in touch. And I mean really 'stay in touch'. I know you've been saying the same thing year after year;I have been too, but this is the year we commit. This is the year we do more than send a few rogue Snapchats and birthday text or post. Coming this fall, we shall put down our pumpkin spice lattes (because we're all basic enough to get one at least once) and pick up our phones. THIS YEAR WE SHALL...text them, because calling is a little intimidating, and not to mention archaic.
How hard is it to send a text? Let your friend know you still care, and your friendship wasn't just a summer fling, doomed to forever fade away as soon as August hit. Ask them about their day. Tell them about yours. How is it that people can be friends with random strangers over social media, but not stay in contact with the friends they've made in person? It's ridiculous.
Here a few good reasons to stay in touch with all of those summer friends.
1. They give you someone to talk to when you just need to be nostalgic about those summer days.
Sometimes, in the dark, cold of the winter, all you need to brighten your mood is a good conversation about summer.
2. Your summer friends are a perfect substitute for when you inevitably become tired of your school friends.
Who better to confide in than someone who doesn't even know the people you are talking about?
3. If you ever take a trip and your near one of your long distance friends, you might be have a place to stay.
Or, at the very least a tour guide and buddy to hang out with for the day.
4. You have someone to send letters and packages to, as well as someone to send them to you.
5. When you finally do see them again, it's like you were never apart!
You get all the benefits of seeing them for the first time in forever, but there is no awkward pause in the conversation.
So, pick up that phone. Text your friends. I'm sure they would love to hear from you and receive tons Snapchats of your pet dog or bunny.
