I knew I wanted to be involved in a sorority, but I was unsure of which one. After going through fall recruitment, I was intrigued. I had not found my fit but was still interested in joining a club or organization where I could meet new people, learn, and enjoy myself. Gamma Phi Beta was not established at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus when I went through fall recruitment. They gave a presentation about how excited they were to join UNLV's Greek community the following spring. I was contacted to meet up at Starbucks with a Collegiate Leadership Consultant named Sadie, where I learned more about Gamma Phi Beta and their history. I felt as though I had known Sadie for years, she calmed my nervousness and made sure that my questions were answered. Even after meeting with her, I was on the fence about recruitment. I thought, "What if this isn't my fit? What will my next steps be if this doesn't work out?" After praying, thinking hard, and discussing it with my family, I decided to go through recruitment and the rest is history. The Eta Rho chapter of Gamma Phi Beta was installed on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016 with 86 members.
Joining Greek Life has come with mixed emotions from "friends" in my life. I've had friends who are happy that I am enjoying myself and excited to see what is next with this new chapter in my life, while others hope "I don't turn into a slut" or just don't approve of my choice to join a sorority. It has been shocking to see how people negatively respond to you when you're wearing your favorite sorority shirt or hanging with your sisters in the Student Union when you don't even know them at all. As my sister Merry Cosgrove has said, all you can do is smile.
I've had the opportunity to meet so many amazing young women who are motivated to change our community and world, and women who have already changed the Gamma Phi Beta world. Many of these women are just like me: they wanted to be involved on campus and thought that being a part of a sorority was for them. I've had the opportunity to become close to women that I know will be a part of my life forever and that will always be down to get tacos with me or attend a last-minute concert. I also have met many amazing people who are involved in other Greek organizations on campus who have been so welcoming and supportive to our chapter. I am so proud that I have women that are as ready as I am to change how individuals look at Greek Life and continue building Gamma Phi Beta on the UNLV Campus.
