1. "Not where I breathe, but where I love, I live," was said by St. Robert Southwell.

But it's not the entire quote:

2. The University of Scranton is 128 years old and still chugging along!

We're the same age as National Geographic!

3. Our mascot is Iggy the Wolf!

4. But, we are also called the Royals.

5. We have no idea what a royal wolf is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A pack of wolves is called a pack. And a royal is a part of a royal family. Like Prince George is a royal because his grandma is the Queen of England.

6. Believe it or not, the 'U' is located on 58 acres!

7. Scranton is the SIXTH largest city in Pennsylvania.

8. We are ranked #8 by the US News rankings of colleges in the North!

9. The people that go to the "U" are a rare breed of amazing, kind, generous and hilarious smashed together.

10. Scranton is home to the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

11. We're also known as "The Electric City."

Why?
Scranton-ians invented the electric-operated trolley system in 1886. Even though the trolley system is no longer running, the nickname still lives.

12. Scranton is the home for the AAA Yankees farm system.

13. And home to the Pennsylvania’s NHL Pittsburgh Penguins farm system, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

14. The University's nursing program is one of the best in the country.

More than 90% of their graduates have gained full-time employment, in the last three years!

15. The Kania School of Management is not too shabby either

Three programs are ranked the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report's ranking:

  • Entrepreneurship ranked No. 21
  • Finance ranked No. 22
  • Accounting ranked No. 31

16. There's going to be an amazing new green where the old Loyola building was.

If it ever gets done.

17. The Rose Room in the KSOM building has one of the best views of Scranton.

18. Actually, the Leahy Building is where the best view is.

19. There's a cadaver lab in Leahy!!! AKA DEAD PEOPLE!!!

20. AMH or Alumni Memorial Hall was a library at one point.

21. During the construction of AMH, part of a forgotten Lackawanna Coal vein was found!

The void was estimated to be 7 feet deep and up to 40 feet wide. Using a digging rig brought in from Texas, contractors sunk 33 steel casings into the ground, each more than 40 feet long, and then poured concrete through them to form pillars in order to support the structure. The project added an estimated $22,000 onto the cost of construction. #yikes

22. The Aquinas the University's newspaper is 100 years old!

It was founded when the 'U' was St. Thomas College.

23. Yes. We were first an all-male college called St. Thomas College.

24. But now, the University is 43 percent male students and 57 percent female students.

25. We have had 13 presidents and are on the search for our 14th!

26. Undefeated in football since 1960!

From 1892 through 1960, the University of Scranton (and its predecessor, St. Thomas College) proudly hosted a varsity football team, called alternately the "Tommies" or the "Royals."

27. The University is made up of three schools. But only the College of Arts and Sciences has been around since 1888.

28. Arthur J. Kania School of Management was founded in 1978.

29. J.A. Panuska, S.J., College of Professional Studies was founded in 1987.

30. The total amount of endowment for 2014 was $162,453,328.

31. Walter Bobbie, the Tony Award-winning theater director for Chicago and actor in Grease, graduated from the University of Scranton.

32. Ryan Howard of the Office, also graduated from the 'U.'


33. The actor who played Father Damien- Jason Miller- from the movie, The Exorcist, graduated from the 'U' too.

35. THE INVENTOR OF MINI-GOLF IS AN ALUM TOO! (Ralph Lomma)

36. There are 18 varsity sports.

37. Women's golf was just added this past year!

38. There are 13 club sports.

39. They range from fencing to hockey to frisbee.

40. There are more than 49,000 alumni worldwide.

41. At University of Scranton, 72% percent of full-time undergraduates receive some kind of need-based financial aid

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
