With the presidential election heating up, there has been a lot of talk about Bernie Sanders' socialism. Many bring up the fact that socialism just comes too close to communism, and considering America's history with the political thought, it's one that brings many to fear. However, some don't notice the little traces of communism embedded in Hollywood movies. Here are just some of them:
1. "Doctor Zhivago" (1965)
This one is cheating a little bit, because it is about the Russian Revolution, that tells the story of the communists coming to power after retracting from World World I. However, it should be noted that it was directed by a British director, David Lean.
2. "Titanic" (1997)
The classic love story, and secretly Marxist?! Yes. However, the Hollywood movie does well in mixing western ideals with the Marxist idea of class struggle. The idea of love overcomes the division between classes and finds itself in Rose and Jack.
3. "Avatar" (2009)
The Marxist theory seems to be a thing in James Cameron's movies. However, in this film, he adapted the class struggle to a species struggle. Still, it's making a statement against colonialism and capitalism.
4. "The Hunger Games" (2012)
Similarly to "Avatar," "The Hunger Games" is more of a criticism of capitalism. The story of the saga is set in the future United States, which has seen its doom due to its capitalist system. However, in the new society, there is still the blaring inequality, which puts one percent of the population at the top, while the rest work for survival.
5. "ANTZ" (1998)
This one is overlooked by many. However, the language and dialogues of the movie is so jarringly anti-communist! This kids movie, actually criticizes the regime, by comparing a colony of ants to a communist state. The protagonist, Zee, finds the fault in the communist-like ant colony, and goes on a quest to find his individuality.
