Raise your hand if you’ve woken up fifteen minutes before you’ve had to walk out the door in the morning. With sleep being a precious (and basically rare) commodity, it’s no wonder why we hit the snooze button so often. However, you can’t deny how unpleasant it is to rush yourself just because you tried to catch some extra sleep. If you know your morning is going to be crazy, there’s ways to shorten your morning routine so you can be ready to go, no matter how late you rise!
1. Pick your outfit the night before.
So simple, but so helpful. As long as you can stick to whatever you pick, laying out your clothes the night before can be very helpful. If you do want to pick your outfit out in the morning though, consider the rule of three: pick out your two regular pieces (like a shirt and jeans, or a blouse and a skirt) and then add a third item to pull it all together, like a scarf or a cardigan. It’s foolproof (especially if your first two pieces are basics, like a white shirt and plain blue jeans), effortless and more importantly, quick!
2. Whether you shower in the morning or not, set up your bathroom counter with the things you need to get ready.
This is another thing to do the night before, but it takes maybe two minutes, tops. By just laying things out—from your toothbrush and deodorant to your makeup essentials—you can visualize what steps you’ll be taking in the morning to get ready, and if push comes to shove, you can also see which steps you can skip altogether if in a pinch. (Plus, there’ll be no need to hunt anything down in the morning—perfect!)
3. Prep breakfast the night before, or have some “on the go” items on hand.
There’s a million breakfast items that you can make beforehand, but things like overnight oats, premade smoothies (already blended or at least with all the ingredients ready) and homemade breakfast burritos are classics for this. If you’re usually not all the hungry in the morning, or you don’t want to mess with recipes, grabbing things like fruit, yogurt and/or a granola bar on your way out the door works too!
4. Check your schedule and see where/what you must do so you’re not blindsided in the morning.
Life is unpredictable, as we all know. However, even just having a small to-do list can smooth anything out. You won’t forget to stop by the bank before leaving for class or work, and if something does come up, you can at least have a visual reminder of what you can negotiate out of your schedule to accommodate this bump in the road.
5. Have things that will make waking up easier at your bedside, ready to go.
Half the battle in the morning is waking up. By having things like your alarm, a bottle of cold water, or even a playlist to accompany your programmed coffeepot as it brews your first cup of the day, on hand, getting up isn’t too much of a hassle. Once you’re up and on your feet, the rest of the morning routine is a breeze.
There’s a million other things that you can do to make your morning routine more do-able and faster, but these five are a good start. Remember though—only you know how you are in the morning, so anticipate your needs when throwing together your morning plan of action!
