Happiness, a seemingly simple state of mind, can sometimes seem impossible to achieve. Between heavy workloads, demanding extracurriculars and all the common problems that come with growing up, it can be easy for teens to settle for a life that is comfortable, rather than completely satisfying. However, with adjustments as straightforward as smiling more often, one’s entire outlook on life can be drastically changed for the better.
1. Learn to let things go
Everything tends to work itself out in the end. The problems you have today, such as getting a bad grade or humiliating yourself in front of your peers, may not seem like a big deal in a year or two. Remember that you are going to make mistakes, and that it is better to move on then to dwell on them. Stressing out over something that has already happened and that you can no longer control is not only a waste of time, but also extremely unhealthy. Rather than feeling like it's the end of the world, remind yourself that there is always tomorrow to fix your missteps.
2. Appreciate the little things in life
Often, we find ourselves complaining about every single detail of our lives. No matter the size of your problems, there is always somebody out there that has it worse. We can become so wrapped up in our own materialistic wants that we forget how much we take for granted. Whenever you're feeling as though the universe is against you, it is crucial to recognize and appreciate the beautiful earth on which you live and the people on it who have stuck by your side. Take time out of each and every day to think about everything and everybody that you should be thankful for.
3. Live in the moment, not on your phone
Although it is extremely tempting to get sucked into the black hole that is social media, try to limit the amount of time spent online. Instead of constantly texting and scrolling through Instagram, put your phone away and focus on making great memories with the people you are with instead. When you look back on a moment, you will care more about the laughs you shared and the crazy experiences you had than the amount of Snapchats you sent. Pulling the plug can force you to step outside your comfort zone and become more present with the people around you.
4. Be open to different people and experiences
More often than not, we find ourselves stuck in the same continuous humdrum routine. By learning to say “yes” more, you can break yourself out of this all-too-familiar everyday lifestyle. Being accepting of different people from all walks of life can broaden your horizons and provide you with completely new perspectives. Becoming more spontaneous can open you up to new and exciting experiences. Even if it seems daunting at first, embracing new things and breaking down boundaries is freeing, and, if nothing else, will give you memories to last a lifetime.
5. Love and believe in yourself
Having the confidence to be unapologetically yourself is one of the fastest routes to happiness. Although self-love can be difficult when society has pre-set standards for the way people should look and behave, having a high self-esteem means just about everything. Learn to embrace your every flaw because it makes you unique. By never doubting your abilities and always believing that you are capable of everything you put your mind to, it will be much easier to find peace of mind. You cannot feel content with your life until you feel 100 percent content with yourself first.
