We've all been there: you're having a super busy week and then all of the sudden your head feels like a balloon and you can't breath out of your own nose. So now you're desperate for a quick fix. Unfortunately, there isn't a single magical solution to instantly cure your congestion, but here are some ways to help you get your nose back a little faster.
Take a steaming hot shower
Take multiple per day if needed. The steam from a shower or even a humidifier will give you a short but instant relief to a stuffy nose. Especially if you have been out in public places all day, by taking a hot shower immediately after getting home you are ensuring that you are not spreading any unwanted outside germs to your home.
Use vapor rub
Vapor rub is your friend. Do your self a favor and go get some. You can put it on your nose, just the outsides of your nostrils or just sniff it to help sooth your nasal passages.
Drink hot liquids
Make sure your staying hydrated with room temperature water, but also drink lots of hot liquids like tea, coffee, hot chocolate or whatever else you like to drink. This will give you warmth from the inside, which can help to reduce any cold. Drinking juices and smoothies with vitamin C is also a great way to give your body an immune boost.
Don't blow
I know you can't help it, but just try not to blow your nose every three seconds. This will not solve anything but make your congestion worse and increase pressure to your head. The reason for your stuffed nose is most likely inflamed nasal passages, not mucus. By blowing too hard, you are only helping to inflame and irritate your nasal passages even more.
Stay home
It can be hard to take time out of our busy schedules to relax, and sometimes it's just not possible. But if it is, then definitely take a day off and stay home where you'll most likely not be exposed to any bacteria, viruses and harsh weather. This will give your body the down time it needs and give you an excuse to catch up on your favorite Netflix shows.
And lastly, only time can truly heal the dreaded stuffy nose. Most of the time a stuffy nose will only last a few day and less than a week. If your congestion lasts more than a week, consult with a doctor to receive proper medication and make sure if it is not something else more serious. But whatever the cause, flu, cold, or allergies, if you follow these steps you'll most likely soon be smelling the roses outside once again. So relax, and remember to appreciate the few benefits of having an excuse to call in sick!
