I'm a college student, and I know from experience that in college there is almost no time to sleep. Homework, classes and extracurriculars knock down your down-time hours by a serious amount. Then, even when you do have time to sleep, it's almost impossible! Your body is so used to being awake that its difficult to even get to sleep. Here are 5 tips that I have learned to help you fall asleep faster and deeper when you can, and to get more rest overall!
1. Take Time to Relax Yourself
It's very important to take time to decompress. Whether its a few minutes of YouTube, video games or just reading for pleasure, that time is necessary for a good night's sleep. Try to set aside a few minutes to yourself at the end of a long day before you just lay down in bed and crash. You'll feel more relaxed and refreshed the next morning!
2. Aromatherapy
Scents are a powerful thing. I have found that the power of scent immediately relaxes my mind and my muscles and allows for deeper sleep. I use lavender scented things to help relax me. I drink chamomile tea and have a lavender plant in my room. Also, I have invested in aromatherapy pillow sprays to help lull myself into a deeper sleep! They really work and I definitely recommend using scents to help relax the mind and body.
3. Tea
Like I mentioned before, I drink chamomile tea at night to help relax my mind. Chamomile is a natural sedative and is very effective at helping people fall asleep faster and more deeply. It is sold in almost any grocery store and is quite affordable.
4. Stretch
Stretching is very important to keep your body free from injury and your muscles relaxed. A relaxed body leads to a relaxed mind, which is a huge step to getting better sleep!
5. Put Away the Devices
This is a tough one! I know personally it is so tempting to lay down in bed and scroll through Facebook and Instagram. However, doing this can prevent your brain from "powering down" which is necessary to fall asleep! If you get into the habit of charging your phone at night or setting it across the room from your bed, it will dramatically decrease the time it takes you to fall asleep.
