It's January, and time for the start of a new semester. Whether you're still enjoying your break or you've already returned to classes, this first month of the new year is the perfect time to make sure things go smoothly, this semester and beyond.
1. Organize Your Schedule
This can be broken down into a couple of steps. First, find your schedule online, and either copy it down or print it out. A paper copy can be really helpful to have in your backpack. Next, make sure you know where the classes are - which building, how to get there, and howlong it'll take you to get from building to building. Lastly, order or buy your books, and make sure you've done any reading you need to do before classes start.
2. Figure Out Your Summer Plan
It may seem like a long way away, but once you're invested in the semester, summer will come up fast, and you should be prepared for when it does. Figure out how you're going to spend those few months. Summer is no longer a time to hang out with your friends, going to the beach, and lounging around. The two most common options are internships and summer jobs. Regardless of what you decide to do, try to make it something productive. This free time is an opportunity to get out there and experience the real world while you still have a tether to dependency.
3. Make a Study Plan
I cannot stress enough how important it is to stay organized throughout the semester. This involves thinking through a plan to study effectively. Where do you study best? Do you study better alone or with others? In the morning or in the evening? Take a moment to puzzle through these questions, and a good plan will follow.
4. Make Sure Your Schedule Isn't Too Tough
There is no shame in dropping a course if you feel like it's too much for you. Don't pile too much on. While a little stress can be good, too much is unhealthy, and you should always be putting your health first. When you combine a full course-load with clubs, a job, or sports, things can get intense. Don't feel pressured to take on everything at once. Remember - your health comes first.
5. Take a Deep Breath
The last week or so for a new semester contains some of the last moments of respite before the chaos of a new semester. Relax now so that later, things won't seem so intense. Take care of yourself. Spend time with your friends and family. Chill out - and then get ready to buckle down.
