My love for Chi Omega grows deeper with each day that is spent with my sweet hooties. Each sorority has their own form of a Creed or formal mission statement, and Chi Omega abides by a sweet Symphony. Greek life has acquired a negative reputation in the eyes of the majority of today’s population. Sorority girl or not, this symphony is applicable to the challenges of everyday life. Here are 5 ways the Chi Omega Symphony has proven the sorority girl stereotype wrong and how to apply it to your every day life:
1) "To live constantly above snobbery of word or deed"
Many people label sorority girls as snobby and catty. We apparently gossip too much and love drama. This quote from the Chi Omega Symphony encourages young women to live above snobbery and to only display positive actions. In college or just life in general, it is quite easy to fall into the ways of this world and judge others or act discordantly. In those moments, remind yourself to live above such negative habits in order to make a positive impact on the world around you. In other terms, hold yourself to higher social standards and others will follow your example.
2) "To place scholarship before social obligation"
According to popular belief, Greek life is full of raging parties and endless recklessness due to a lack of motivation and a love for partying. This quote encourages Greek women to place their scholastic obligations before all else. I can honestly say that many girls in my chapter will skip exchanges or social events to study because they value their education more than their social life. As young adults, the opportunities to go out are seemingly endless. The social scene in college is attractive to most people, but it may cause someone to lose sight of the true purpose of pursuing a higher level of education. When your grades are suffering because they are second to social obligations, remind yourself that scholarship should always be placed first.
3) "To be lovable...rather than popular"
While girls in sororities are sociable, that is not their main motivation for being friendly and outgoing. Greek women are not kind just to be fake, they are kind because they love interacting with others. It's narutal for humans to long for acceptance among their peers. If someone is lovable because of actions that match their kind words, they shouldn’t worry or stress about being accepted by their peers. The time and effort required to maintain popularity is not worth it when it’s more rewarding to simply be lovable and kind.
4) "To be womanly always; to be discouraged never"
There is a negative light surrounding the dignity of many Greek women, which discourages many of them from pursuing certain goals and aspirations. This quote encourages young women to defy stereotypes and never let discouragement get the best of them. In today’s society, women are often discouraged in the workplace, academic and social scenes. The Chi Omega Symphony encourages women to embrace their strengths while never allowing others to discourage them. Remember this when other doubt you and your capabilities!
5) "To be loyal under any and all circumstances"
The girls within my sorority are some of the kindest and sweetest people that I have ever met. Their loyalty runs deep and their love for one another is so strong. It has been said that sorority girls are sometimes fake, but these are some of the most loyal friends I have ever been blessed with. If you wish to have true friends that are loyal, you must first display loyalty to others under any and all circumstances.
I hope that I have been able to dispel some common stereotypes surrounding sorority girls with these quotes from the Chi Omega Symphony. Try one or two of these applications in your life and maybe you’ll find out that Greek life can be encouraging after all!
