I have always been afraid of running because I simply could not do it. I hated seeing runners, and always envied their endurance and perseverance. However, seven weeks ago, I decided to overcome my fear because I was tired of complaining about not being able to do something about my fear. I downloaded the “C25K Free Application” as a joke at first because I could not even run two laps without falling to the floor and deciding never to do it again. Something that started as a joke brought out something really special in me and these are the five reasons this free app changed my life.
1. Small progress outweighs fast results.
I have always looked for the easy way out in terms of working out, losing weight etc. However, I have recently learned that we can only shape our progress through small steps. Those moments help us with the bigger goal. Who knew that the cliché “It's not the destination, but the journey” is actually true. When you focus on becoming better during the process, everything else starts to fall in place. Each week, I saw myself becoming stronger, and those small moments are starting to become more valuable than the end result. So much so, that I do not even remember the end goal anymore.
2. You do not have to be a runner to become one.The best thing I love about this app is that it welcomes beginners. I could not run one minute straight seven weeks ago, but the app started began with making me run for one minute and then walking three minutes. It developed a pattern for me, so I would not even realize that during the fifth week I was running for ten minutes and walking for three minutes.
3. It makes me feel empowered.Running brings out my greatest potential. After every week I start to think anything is possible because each week I accomplish a goal I never thought I could. Afterwards, it carries over to other activities during the day. I feel more empowered to accomplish other goals because I start to believe in my own power a little more each week.
4. Getting in shape is a nice side effect.Almost everyone made a news years resolution for getting in shape for 2015. This app is the best way to do so because it tracks how you will develop through the 8 weeks. Not only will you get in shape, but also you will build endurance for any other cardiovascular activity. However, it does not hurt that you will see amazing results with your body.
5. IT ACTUALLY WORKS.I am currently on the seventh week and I never thought I would be able to run for 20 minutes at one time. I encourage anyone who wants to be a runner, compete in 5k races, run in a Color run, run the Big Chill next semester or simply wants to start working out to begin with the 5k App. 8 weeks could change your life. After next week, it is time to train for the 10k (they have an app for that as well).
