With recruitment season right around the corner, I always stop and take time to remember life before going Greek. Four years ago I was that anxious freshman who was about to embark on recruitment week. Four years later, and I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to have been apart of such an amazing experience. Every year during recruitment I fall in love all over again with my sorority, and I am so happy with the choice that I made to go Greek. Here are five ways that joining a sorority bettered my life.
1. My chapter set a standard for me to live by.
We all complain about our chapter's rules we have to abide by, but let's be honest, we all secretly appreciate them, because we know they keep us from making really terrible decisions. And we know we all secretly judge the girl dancing on a table at the bar, or the girl dancing on the pole in the fraternity party.
2. They challenged me to better myself.
It's no secret that we are all tempted to go out instead of study, or sleep instead of go to class. Who knows what kind of GPA we would have, if we didn't join a sorority who made us maintain a minimum GPA. We might all groan when getting called into grades standards, but we know that we will have a better future because of it.
3. They gave me a home away from home.
I came to college with no one. Thanks to my sorority I am leaving college with a 100+ sisters who I know I can count on. I know I always will have someone to cry with, laugh with, and dance with.
4. My chapter taught me to go outside of my comfort zone.
When joining a sorority, we are always told to get involved. I never thought I had what it took to have a position in the chapter. However, with the support of my sisters, I took on positions I never thought I could, and I am so grateful that I did. I learned that you get what you put in. This might sound cliche, but it is so true. In order to get the most out of going Greek, get involved.
5. They taught me how to be independent.
Why need a boy when you have 100 sisters to lean on and hang out with? When you mess with a sorority girl, you mess with an entire chapter. I couldn't be more grateful for the sisters who will always have my back no matter what.
Thank you to my sorority for making me a better person.
